Parents Organization Update Meet Entries on the Website Meet Results Now Posted on the Website Practice Changes in Mid January Practice Schedule this Week ![]() DOZENS OF BRILLIANT SWIMS AT WINTERFEST Like a snowball rolling down hill, the Elite Swim Club is gathering momentum, power and size as it approaches the final portion of the 2004-05 Winter Season. Performing this past weekend at Winterfest 2005 (held at Rutgers University), the squad representing Elite was the 5th largest out of 37 New Jersey teams. More importantly, the Elite swimmers translated their recent hard work and focused practices into a multitude of brilliant swims as highlighted by the following: Four Elite swimmers qualified for their initial Junior Olympic cuts (the current Elite JO squad consists of 23 swimmers). They were: 1) 9 year old Courtney Bronson, who qualified in the 50 butterfly (37.64) 2) 12 year old Breanna Fitzpatrick, who qualified in the 50 breast (37.13) 3) 12 year old Lydia Vollavanh, who qualified in the 200 breast (3.02.05) 4) 13 year old Brittany Ross, who qualified in the 200 breast (2.44.71) Other swimmers who added Junior Olympic cut times to their resumes were: 1) 11 year old Nicki Ross, who qualified in the 200 back (2.38.20) 2) 12 year old Danielle Martinez, who qualified in the 50 back (33.84) 3) 12 year old Duncan Hall, who qualified in the 100 back (1.13.00) and the 100 IM (1.13.65) 4) 13 year old Rachel Lieberberg, who qualified in the 200 Free (2.07.39) 5) 14 year old Christian DeFluri, who qualified in the 100 back (1.04.65), the 500 free (5.32.00), the 200 back (2.20.08) and the 100 breast (1.11.94) 6) 16 year old Jonathan Denby, who qualified in the 100 breast (1.06.09) 7) 17 year old Jeff Ayres 10 second drop in the 200 butterfly (2.13. 02) As in past championship meets this year, Elite was lead by its three 10 year old sensations: Michael Li, Alyssa Pepper and Kaitlin Farinella. All three were medal winners: Li finished 2nd in the 50 breast (36.67), 2nd in the 200 IM (2.37.33), 3rd in the 100 butterfly (1.21.37) and 3rd in 50 back (34.79). Pepper, who was 6 for 6 in personal bests this weekend, placed 3rd in both the 100 butterfly (1.20.50) and in the 50 Free (30.72). Farinella placed 2nd in the 100 backstroke (1.18.56) with a 6 second drop. Other highlights included: -In her send off (she is moving to Australia next week), Senior Lauren Andriesen performed 5 personal bests (out of 6 swims), including impressive swims in the 200 breast (2.42.04), the 200 back (2.22.87) and the 100 breast (1.15.59). -Two 12 year old boys, Venkatesh Duvvuri and Kevin Estok, qualified for numerous Junior Olympic cuts times but unforunately, both age-up prior to the big meet. Venkatesh was 6 for 6 in his weekend performances, including a 10 second drop in the 100 fly (1.10.82). Kevin was also 6 for 6 in his efforts, including a 2.56.31 in the 200 breast. -Senior Craig Bostwick’s 7 second drop in the 200 back (2.19.73). -Senior Nick Trojanowski’s 6 second drop in the 200 free (1.54.86) -Senior Austin Mezsaros’s 3 second drop in the 200 free (1.54.03) -Senior Prep Corey Deatly’s 17 second drop in the 1000 free (11.48.25) and 27 second drop in the 500 free (5.46.17). -Senior Julianne Furdyna’s 15 second drop in the 100 free (11.24.03) swum just minutes after her 500 free. -Senior Jerry Chiu’s 17 second drop in the 400 IM (4.55.10). -Senior Preps Meghan Montagna’s (2.37.71) and Brianna Drapeau’s (2.38.75) 200 butterflys. Drapeau also had a 16 second drop in her 400 IM. -Senior Prep Alistair Hall’s 11 second drop in the 400 IM. -Senior Prep Colleen Mason’s 10 second drop in the 500 Free (5.49.42). -Wave Gold Henry Scott’s 8 second drop in the 200 IM (2.27.42) and 6 second drop in the 100 fly (1.05.66). ![]() DUAL MEET SCHEDULED FOR JAN 15 IS CANCELLED; The previously scheduled dual meet verses the Caldwell Cyclones for this weekend (Saturday, Jan 15) has been cancelled. Caldwell will join Elite and Monmouth in the scheduled Sunday, January 23rd 12 & Under dual meet to be held at Morristown-Beard. This weekend, 7 swimmers from Elite will participate in the prestigious Burgdorff Invitational (Long Course) Meet held at Rutgers. Those seven are Maggie Beaudouin, Rachel Lieberberg, Andrea Luallen-Egg, Colleen Mason, Duncan Hall, Ryan Kiley & Michael Li. In addition, one Sunday the Seniors will participate in a team 1650 swim at the Open Distance Meet held at Montclair State University. ![]() “NEIL WALKER” REGISTRATION HAS STARTED Twenty-seven swimmers have already registered for Elite’s 4th annual “Olympian Day.” Flyers describing the January 29th event were handed out to all swimmers several weeks ago. This year, Elite will host two time Olympian Neil Walker at Morristown-Beard from 2 pm to 6 pm. Walker is a two time Gold Medalist from Wisconsin and the University of Texas. This clinic is for Elite swimmers only. Due to size constraints, only the 1st 140 swimmers will be accepted into the clinic. Please note that early registration (extended to January 10th) will save each swimmer $15. The list of those registered is posted on the website under Neil Walker Clinic. In addition to discussing his swimming career, Neil will provide stroke technique and motivation tips along with actually getting into the water and swimming with Elite swimmers. Each swimmer will also receive a training group picture of Neil and a goody bag filled with swimming accessories (including a racing cap). This is NOT an event to miss!!! Get your registration in now!!! ![]() WORLD CLASS SWIMMING NEXT DOOR IN FEBRUARY Many of the top swimmers in the world will compete on Long Island at the World Cup Championships February 11 & 12. Held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center (site of past Sectionals Competitions), the World Cup is a short course meter meet. A Friday and Saturday meet, preliminaries will be swum at 10:00 am and finals will be held at 6:00 pm. Being an international meet, there will be 50 meter events in all 4 events. Tickets can be purchased by call he Nassau County Aquatic Center at 516-572-0509. ![]() BAD WEATHER? CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR PRACTICE INFO The procedure for finding out if practice has been cancelled due to bad weather is to 1) check the website 2) check your email or 3) call Bill’s house to listen to the recorded message. The basic formula is as follows: both Newark Academy and Morristown-Beard close during snow storms (even minor ones) and ice storms. Even if there is a threat of bad weather, the schools may close. Elite is unable to use the pools when the schools are closed. Thus, if there is bad weather or even a threat of bad weather, please check the webite or the phone message. ![]() NJ TIME STANDARDS POSTED ON ELITE’S WEBSITE Time Standards for the End of the Season Championship Meets have been adopted by New Jersey Swimming, are posted on Elite’s website (under time standards) and are posted on the wall at Newark Academy. These standards are final for the 2004-05 season. Swimmers 10 & Older who perform times faster than the posted Gold times will qualify for Junior Olympics to be held March 18th thru 20th. Swimmers 11 & Older who perform times faster than the Silver times but slower than the Gold times will qualify for the Silver Championships to be held March 12th & 13th. All other 11 & Older swimmers will compete at the Bronze Championships to be held March 5th & 6th. Swimmers 9 & 10 who do not qualify for Junior Olympics will compete at the 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championship Meet to be held February 26th & 27th (hosted by Elite at Newark Academy). All swimmers 8 & Under will compete at the Mini-Championships to be held February 26th. ![]() ELITE GEARING FOR 9-10 SILVER/BRONZE CHAMPIONSHIPS; As previously reported, Elite (along with Sea Dragons) will be hosting one of the two 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championships this season on Saturday, February 26 & Sunday, February 27. Elite volunteered to run this meet to prevent “bottom cuts” from being instituted (and thus, eliminating an end of the season championship for many New Jersey swimmers, including many, many Elite swimmers). In an effort to get organized, Elite will hold an organizational meeting on Wednesday, January 26 at 7:00 pm at Newark Academy for all parents of Elite swimmers whom are 9 and 10 year olds. It is extremely important that all appropriate parents attend. ![]() PARENTS ORGANIZATION UPDATE FUNDRAISER COMMITTEE: Rita Furdyna (rfurdyna@watsonpharm.com) and Peter Wolfson (pjwolfson@pbnlaw.com) have agreed to be co-chairs of the Fundraiser Committee. Initial ideas focused on including fundraising efforts during the Elite End of the Season Banquet scheduled for April 3. Suggestions included gift baskets, program, 50-50’s and raffles. Rita and Peter would welcome outsided ideas for the above and/or additional fundraisers. Please contact Rita or Peter at the above email addresses with your ideas and/or your willingness to volunteer. TIMERS COMMITTEE: The timing committee and coordination of timing assignments is evolving. All Parents attending meets are requested to: 1) volunteer to time and/or 2) volunteer to organize the timing at each session at the meets. Please follow the two week schedule carefully. 1) Tuesday, January, 11: Due to a high school swim meet, the Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will start at 5:30 pm. The Wavebuster Blacks will start at 6:15 pm. The Senior Preps will end at 8:00 pm. 2) Wednesday, January, 12: Due to a high school swim meet, the Senior Preps will start at 7:30 pm. 3) Thursday, January 13: Due to a high school swim meet, the Senior Preps will end at 8:00 pm. 4) Friday, January, 14: Due to a high school swim meet, the Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will practice from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm. Wave Blacks will practice will practice from 6:45 pm to 8:00 pm 5) Sunday, January 16: Seniors will participate in Open Distance Meet. No Senior practice. 6) Monday, January 17 (Martin Luther King Day): Newark Academy is closed. Wave Teals will practice from 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm at Morristown Beard. Wave Golds will practice from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm at Morristown Beard. Seniors will practice from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm (with Senior Preps) at Morristown Beard. 7) Tuesday, January 18: Due to a high school swim meet, the Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will start at 5:30 pm. The Wavebuster Blacks will start at 6:15 pm. The Seniors will start at 7:30 pm. 8) Thursday, January 20: Due to a high school swim meet, the Senior Preps will end at 8:00 pm. 9) Friday, January 21: Newark Academy will host the (high school) Colonial Hills Conference Meet. There will be no practice for the Marlin Teals, Marlin Blacks and the Wave Blacks. 10) Sunday, January 23: Dual meet verses Monmouth Barracudas at 12:00 pm. All Marlin Teals, Marlin Blacks, Wave Teals, Wave Blacks and Wave Golds will participate.
