Check the Website for Practice Info NJ Time Standards Posted on Elite’S Website Parents Organization Update Meet Entries on the Website Meet Results Now Posted on the Website Practice Changes in Early/Mid January Practice Schedule this Week ![]() INEXPERIENCED “WESTERNERS” RETURN HOME TOUGHER Elite’s youth and enthusiasm overwhelmed rigorous workouts, overcast skies and a stomach virus on Elite’s 4th annual Senior training trip to Tempe, Arizona. Twenty-four swimmers survived 12 grueling practices in 6 days (including starting the trip with 3 two-hour practices within a space of 22 hours!!!) at Arizona State University’s outdoor pool facility. Elite trained both long course (50 meters) and short course (25 yards) on a daily basis and swum approximately 13,000 yards each day (over 7 miles) during four hours in the pool. The training trip was a 1st for 19 of the 24 swimmers. Many of the swimmers left New Jersey on the day after Christmas wondering if they were up to the task. A mild stomach virus, which sidelined 5 separate swimmers for a practice or two early on, did not help ease swimmers concerns. However, the Seniors learned to breakdown their workouts into small, achievable tasks. By their last two practices (when the swimmers were most tired) they were able to rise to the occasion and post their best two practices (the first being a demanding pace set practice and the second being a duplicate of the “Practice from Hell” consisting of one hundred and five 100 yard swims-a straight 3.25 hour practice)!!! No other Senior Training group has accomplished the latter on a training trip before this group. Out of the poo and despite the overcast skies, the swimmers managed to muster enough energy to spend six hours at the Tempe Tostito New Year’s Eve Block Party (including dancing!!), attend a college swim meet (Marist verses Wyoming-including Olympian Scott Usher), attend a hour long lecture regarding college admission for high school athletes by Marist Coach Larry Van Wagoner, shop in downtown Tempe, witness the festivites surrounding a college bowl game (ASU is the home of the Fiesta Bowl, which was played during the last night of the training trip) and jump from ASU’s 10 meter diving tower. Elite swimmers who survived Arizona were:
The Seniors, Bill and Brandy would like to thank Jan Liu, who was the training group chaperone and who performed numerous behind the scene tasks throughout the week. ![]() WINTERFEST UP NEXT This coming weekend, Elite swimmers will participate in one of the most important meets this year: Winterfest 2005. This clinic is for Elite swimmers only. Due to size constraints, only the 1st 140 swimmers will be accepted into the clinic. Please note that early registration (extended to January 10th) will save each swimmer $15. In addition to discussing his swimming career, Neil will provide stroke technique and motivation tips along with actually getting into the water and swimming with Elite swimmers. Each swimmer will also receive a training group picture of Neil and a goody bag filled with swimming accessories (including a racing cap). This is NOT an event to miss!!! Get your registration in now!!! ![]() BAD WEATHER? CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR PRACTICE INFO The procedure for finding out if practice has been cancelled due to bad weather is to 1) check the website or 2) call Bill’s house to listen to the recorded message. The basic formula is as follows: both Newark Academy and Morristown-Beard close during snow storms (even minor ones). Even if there is a threat of bad weather, the schools may close. Elite is unable to use the pools when the schools are closed. Thus, if there is bad weather or even a threat of bad weather, please check the webite or the phone message. ![]() NJ TIME STANDARDS POSTED ON ELITE’S WEBSITE Time Standards for the End of the Season Championship Meets have been adopted by New Jersey Swimming, are posted on Elite’s website (under time standards) and are posted on the wall at Newark Academy.
