Showcasing its talent in two separate meets, Elite swimmers revealed their impressive training gains at both the Burgdorff Invitational (held at Rutgers) and the Open Distance Meet (held at Montclair State) this past weekend. Six Elite swimmers competed in the prestigious Burgdorff meet, the only New Jersey long course meter meet held during the Winter Season (long course swimming is considered to be much more challenging than short course meter). Leading the way for Elite was Senior Maggie Beaudouin and Wave Black Michael Li. Beaudouin, fresh from her Arizona training trip, posted impressive best times in her 200 IM (2.42.22- a 4 second drop) and 400 IM (5.38.31- a 8 second drop). Li, fresh from tearing up the pool at Winterfest last weekend, placed 2nd in the 50 breast (42.13), 2nd in the 100 breast (1.33.49), 3rd in the 50 back (38.24) and 3rd in the 100 back (1.25.07)!! Duncan Hall (1), Rachel Lieberberg (1), Andrea Luallen-Egg and Colleen Mason (1) also represented Elite at Burgdorff. Across the state, the rest of the Elite seniors were competing in a “team 1650.” Entered only in the 66 lap race at the Open Distance Meet, Elite Seniors Julianne Furdyna (19.34.and Jeff Ayres won their respective events. Furdyna’s time of 19.34.07 was over 1 minute faster than she swam last year at this time!!! Also swimming spectacularly for the girls were 2nd place finisher Lindsay Scott (20.00.33), 3rd place finisher Corey Deatly (20.00.97), 4th place finisher Veronica Smith (20.17.50) and six place finisher Katie Kilcullen (20.31.17). On the boys side, 2nd place finisher Nick Trojanowski just missed a Junior Olympic cut with his 18.03.13 swim, 3rd place finisher Austin Meszaros (18.29.16) and 7th place finisher Mickey Ennis (19.19.09). ![]() TRI-MEET VS. MONMOUTH AND CALDWELL AT MBS THIS SUNDAY Elite will host a tri-meet this coming Sunday, January 23 at Morristown-Beard against the Monmouth Barracudas and the Caldwell Cyclones. All swimmers in the Wave Gold, Wave Black, Wave Teal, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teals are scheduled to compete. Originally a 12 & Under meet, the meet has been expanded to include 13 & olders in the 50 free. In addition to individual events, all swimmers will participate in two relays. Warm-ups for the 10 & Unders are at 12:00 pm and the warm-ups for the 11 & Olders are at 2:45 pm. ![]() “NEIL WALKER” REGISTRATION JUST 2 WEEKS AWAY!! Fifty-seven swimmers have already registered for Elite’s 4th annual “Olympian Day.” Flyers describing the January 29th event were handed out to all swimmers several weeks ago. This year, Elite will host two time Olympian Neil Walker at Morristown-Beard from 2 pm to 6 pm. Walker is a two time Gold Medalist from Wisconsin and the University of Texas. This clinic is for Elite swimmers only. Due to size constraints, only the 1st 140 swimmers will be accepted into the clinic. The cost is now $65 (as early registration has expired). The list of those registered is posted on the website under Neil Walker Clinic. In addition to discussing his swimming career, Neil will provide stroke technique and motivation tips along with actually getting into the water and swimming with Elite swimmers. Each swimmer will also receive a training group picture of Neil and a goody bag filled with swimming accessories (including a racing cap). This is NOT an event to miss!!! Get your registration in now!!! ![]() ELITE GEARING FOR 9-10 SILVER/BRONZE CHAMPIONSHIPS; As previously reported, Elite (along with Sea Dragons) will be hosting one of the two 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championships this season on Saturday, February 26 & Sunday, February 27. Elite volunteered to run this meet to prevent “bottom cuts” from being instituted (and thus, eliminating an end of the season championship for many New Jersey swimmers, including many, many Elite swimmers). In an effort to get organized, Elite will hold an organizational meeting on Wednesday, January 26 at 7:00 pm at Newark Academy for all parents of Elite swimmers whom are 9 and 10 year olds. It is extremely important that all appropriate parents attend. ![]() MEET INFO REGARDING DUAL MEET VS. TWST (SUN, JAN 30) NOW POSTED ON WEBSITE Elite’s Wavebusters and Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will compete against the Tidal Wave Swim Club from Springfield on Sunday, January 30 at Morristown-Beard School. Warm-ups for the 10 & Unders is 12:00 pm and Warm-ups for 11 & Older is 2:45 pm. Meet entry information is posted on the website. ![]() WORLD CLASS SWIMMING NEXT DOOR IN FEBRUARY Many of the top swimmers in the world will compete on Long Island at the World Cup Championships February 11 & 12. Held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center (site of past Sectionals Competitions), the World Cup is a short course meter meet. A Friday and Saturday meet, preliminaries will be swum at 10:00 am and finals will be held at 6:00 pm. Being an international meet, there will be 50 meter events in all 4 events. Tickets can be purchased by call he Nassau County Aquatic Center at 516-572-0509. ![]() BAD WEATHER? CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR PRACTICE INFO The procedure for finding out if practice has been cancelled due to bad weather is to 1) check the website 2) check your email or 3) call Bill’s house to listen to the recorded message. The basic formula is as follows: both Newark Academy and Morristown-Beard close during snow storms (even minor ones) and ice storms. Even if there is a threat of bad weather, the schools may close. Elite is unable to use the pools when the schools are closed. Thus, if there is bad weather or even a threat of bad weather, please check the webite or the phone message. ![]() NJ TIME STANDARDS POSTED ON ELITE’S WEBSITE Time Standards for the End of the Season Championship Meets have been adopted by New Jersey Swimming, are posted on Elite’s website (under time standards) and are posted on the wall at Newark Academy. These standards are final for the 2004-05 season. Swimmers 10 & Older who perform times faster than the posted Gold times will qualify for Junior Olympics to be held March 18th thru 20th. Swimmers 11 & Older who perform times faster than the Silver times but slower than the Gold times will qualify for the Silver Championships to be held March 12th & 13th. All other 11 & Older swimmers will compete at the Bronze Championships to be held March 5th & 6th. Swimmers 9 & 10 who do not qualify for Junior Olympics will compete at the 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championship Meet to be held February 26th & 27th (hosted by Elite at Newark Academy). All swimmers 8 & Under will compete at the Mini-Championships to be held February 26th. ![]() PARENTS ORGANIZATION UPDATE FUNDRAISER COMMITTEE: Rita Furdyna (rfurdyna@watsonpharm.com) and Peter Wolfson (pjwolfson@pbnlaw.com) have agreed to be co-chairs of the Fundraiser Committee. Initial ideas focused on including fundraising efforts during the Elite End of the Season Banquet scheduled for April 3. Suggestions included gift baskets, program, 50-50’s and raffles. Rita and Peter would welcome outsided ideas for the above and/or additional fundraisers. Please contact Rita or Peter at the above email addresses with your ideas and/or your willingness to volunteer. TIMERS COMMITTEE: The timing committee and coordination of timing assignments is evolving. All Parents attending meets are requested to: 1) volunteer to time and/or 2) volunteer to organize the timing at each session at the meets. Check the “Meet Results” category in the table of contents and then click on the results of the meet you wish to review. ![]() PRACTICE CHANGES IN MID/LATE JANUARY High School Swim Meets will alter the practice times of many Elite practices during January (high school’s busiest portion of their season). Please follow the two week schedule carefully. 1) Monday, January 17 (Martin Luther King Day): Newark Academy is closed. Wave Teals will practice from 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm at Morristown Beard. Wave Golds will practice from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm at Morristown Beard. Seniors will practice from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm (with Senior Preps) at Morristown Beard. 2) Tuesday, January 18: Due to a high school swim meet, the Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will start at 5:30 pm. The Wavebuster Blacks will start at 6:15 pm. The Seniors will start at 7:30 pm. The Senior Preps practice will end at 8:00 pm 3) Thursday, January 20: Due to a high school swim meet, the Senior Preps will end at 8:00 pm. 4) Friday, January 21: Newark Academy will host the (high school) Colonial Hills Conference Meet. There will be no practice for the Marlin Teals, Marlin Blacks and the Wave Blacks. 5) Sunday, January 23: Dual meet verses Monmouth Barracudas at 12:00 pm. All Marlin Teals, Marlin Blacks, Wave Teals, Wave Blacks and Wave Golds will participate. Senior Preps and Seniors will have a combined practice from 9:30 am to 11:30 am 6) Tuesday, January 25: Due to a high school swim meet, the Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will start at 5:30 pm. The Wavebuster Blacks will start at 6:15 pm. The Seniors will start at 7:30 pm. 7) Wednesday, January 26: Due to a high school swim meet, the Senior Preps will start at 7:15 pm. 8) Saturday, January 29: Due to the Olympian Neil Walker Clinic, there will not be practice for Wave Teals or Wave Golds. 9) Sunday, January 30: Due to the dual Meet with TWST, the Seniors and Senior Preps will have a combined practice from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm ![]() PRACTICE SCHEDULE THIS WEEK
