Competing in the premier swimming event of the Winter Season, Elite’s best attacked the 2005 New Jersey Junior Olympics with the same gusto and enthusiasm they have with all season long, capping a spectacular 7 month run with a multitude of memorable swims this past weekend at Rutgers University. All though all 4 age groups contributed to Elite’s 363 point total (good for 22nd place out of 45 teams), Elite was led by their youngest swimmers: the 9 & 10 age group. Michael Li, Elite’s own “Michael” phenom (the other being that Phelps kid), placed in the top 8 in each of his 9 swims, including 2nd place in both the 50 breast (36.15) and the 100 breast (1.17.39). These two swims earned Michael a berth on the New Jersey Zone Team, which will compete next week against Zone Teams from Maine thru Virginia (the “Spring” Zone team is picked from the top 2 finishers in each event at JO’s whom apply for the team). Li’s 9 swims contributed 121 points toward Elite’s score. Also earning a place among the premier swimmers in the state were Elite’s 9 & 10 girls duo of Alyssa Pepper and Kaitlin Farinella. Pepper started the action Friday by dropping 2+ seconds in her 50 back swim, placing 3rd with a fabulous 34.31 time. Equally stunning, Farinella followed up on Saturday by nailing her 50 free swim with a 29.55 time, which also placed her 3rd overall. On Sunday, both girls got into the act as Farinella cruised to a 5th place finish in the 100 free (1.06.03) while Pepper followed with another 3rd place finish in the 100 back with a 1.15.63 time. By reason of their 3rd place finishes, both Farinella and Pepper will be considered for the New Jersey Zone Team, to be picked this week from the applicants. Joining Farinella and Pepper on their 5th place freestyle relay and the 6th place medley relay were Courtney Brosnan and Jacquelyn Mullens, both whom contributed fast relays splits. Seventeen year old Jeffrey Ayres, finishing up his spectacular Elite career, qualified for finals in both the 100 breast and the 200 breast stroke events. In both final performances, Jeff improved on his morning efforts by placing 12th in the 100 breast (1.03.09) and 11th in the 200 breast (2.17.89). Ayres also placed 14th in the 1650 (a mile swim) free with a personal best of 17.32.65. Lastly, Jeff surpassed two magical time barriers for the 1st time with his sprint freestyle efforts: 1) swimming under 1.50 for the 1st time in the 200 free (1.49.41) in his opening weekend swim and 2) under 50 seconds in the 100 free with a 49.82-only the 3rd Elite swimmer to go under 50 seconds. Ayres, by reason of his fabulous breaststroke swims plus a newly instituted rule preventing Sectional qualifiers a berth on the Zone team, will also be under consideration for the New Jersey Zone Team. Maggie Beaudouin, Elite’s 14 year old star, added brilliant 15th place swims in 3 events: the 200 free (2.01.87), the 1000 free (11.12.26- a 12 second drop) and the 1650 free (18.55.78-a 22 second drop). Rounding out the individual Elite scorers, twelve year old and 1st time JO qualifier Danielle Martinez torpedoed to a 15th place finish with a 2 second drop in her 50 back swim (31.86). Several boys relays also provided noteworthy swims: 1) Boys Open 800 yard free relay consisting of Austin Meszaros, Nick Trojanowski, Ryan Kiley and Jeff Ayres placed 12th overall 2) Jeff Ruhle joined Meszaros, Trojanowski and Ayres on the 11th place boys 15-19 400 yard free relay 3) Ruhle (back), Jon Denby (breast), Kiley (fly) and Meszaros (free) placed 12th in the boys 15-19 400 medley relay 4) Venkatesh Duvvuri (back), Christian DeFluri (breast), Ned Scott (fly) and Henry Scott (free) placed 13th in the boys 13-14 400 medley relay 5) Peter Davey (back), Michael Li (breast), Chris Plunkett (fly) and Krishna Duvvuri (free) placed 13th in the boys 10 & Under 200 Medley relay 6) Davey, Duvvuri, and Li were joined by Ben Inglese on the 12th place finish of the Boys 10 & Under 200 Free Relay Swimmers whom qualified and participated for individual JO events were:

Each summer, numerous Elite swimmers spend a rewarding week (or two) at a summer swim camp. The benefits of such a camp are: 1) individual attention by reknown swim coaches 2) an increased knowledge of the sport of swimming and 3) personal growth that occurs as a result of “being on one’s own.” The formula that seems to work best is finding an Elite friend to spend the week with at the swim camp. If you are considering sending your swimmer to a swim camp, now is the time to do the research and make decisions (many of these camps are sold out by mid-Spring). In the back of the mailbox, there are a list of swim camps which Elite swimmers have attended in the past and where to find more information about each camp. In addition, Bill can email this list to you at your request. This summer: think Swim Camps!! ![]() NJ TIME STANDARDS POSTED ON ELITE’S WEBSITE Time Standards for the End of the Season Championship Meets have been adopted by New Jersey Swimming, are posted on Elite’s website (under time standards) and are posted on the wall at Newark Academy. These standards are final for the 2004-05 season. ![]() PRACTICE SCHEDULE THIS WEEK
