ELITE FEASTS AT
MEMORIAL DAY SMORGASBORD!!:
2 SECTIONALS, 17 ZONES & 49
JUNIOR OLYMPICS CUTS,
5 MEET RECORDS, SIXTEEN 1ST & NINE 2ND PLACE
FINISHES
& JESS IS GOING TO
CANADA!!!
At every level, Elite swimmers performed brilliantly this past weekend at the Memorial Day Invitational Meet held at Rutgers University. Elite swimmers qualified 2 new Sectional events, 17 new Zone events, broke 5 meet records, won 16 events (and placed 2nd in 9 more out of a total of 96 events!!) and earned 49 new lcm Junior Olympic cuts. Plus, Elite swimmer Jess Gorham (who is a Canadian citizen) qualified for Canada’s equivalent of Junior Nationals called the Canadian Age Group Championships. Whew!!! What a weekend!
With her 1st place finish in the Open 50 free (27.88), her 5th place finish in the 100 back (1.07.93) and her 8th place finish in the 200 back (2.28.05), the 14 year old Canadian earned 3 swims at Canada’s premier Age Group meet, which will be held from July 27 thru August 1 in Montreal, Canada (right during our Junior Olympics!!). Jess’s times also put her well within range of USA Swimming’s lcm and scy Junior Nationals!!
While Jess competed in Open events to give her possible 2nd chances (Open events had finals), Elite had a trio of 14 & Under swimmers who literally manhandled their age group. 14 year old Ryan Sebastian won all 6 of his events, broke 4 meet records and earned a Sectional qualifying time. In racing order, Ryan broke the following meet records: 1) 100 back (1.03.96-just .17 over the Sectional qualifying time) 2) 400 IM (4.50.90-his new Sectional qualifying time 3) 100 fly (1.01.29-just .3 over the Sectional qualifying time and 4) 200 IM (2.18.31). Ryan also won the 200 fly (2.20.41) and the 200 back (2.16.86-Ryan already had the Sectional qualifying time in scy).
13 year old Sarah Slepian touched 1st in four of her six events, earning her 4th Sectional qualifying time & grabbing a meet record of her own. Sarah rewrote the meet record book with her 1.08.82 time in the 100 back (she already had the scy Sectional time) and added her 4th Sectional qualifying swim with her 2.27.59 time in the 200 back. Sarah also won the 400 IM (5.17.19) and the 200 IM (2.31.24). Sarah added a pair of 3rd place finishes in the 100 breast (1.20.65) and the 200 breast (2.50.11).
Anthony Rizzo, who joined Elite this spring, won a pair of events and earned Zone (and JO) qualifying times in all 6 of his events. Anthony won both the 200 free (2.06.14) and the 400 free (4.25.92). Anthony placed 2nd (both times behind Sebastian) in both the 400 IM (5.00.35) and the 200 fly (2.24.61). Anthony also placed 3rd in the 200 IM (2.21.20) and 4th in the 100 free (59.13).
10 year old Emily Fu won the 50 breast in a Zone (her 1st!) qualifying time of 45.42 (actually, Elite went 1-2-3 in the event!!). Emily also placed 4th in the 100 breast (1.39.54-a JO qualifier) and also earned JO cuts in the 200 IM (3.17.86) and the 50 back (42.65).
12 year old Emily Gorham (yes, the family had a good weekend!) won the 50 fly (32.32) and placed 2nd in the 50 back (35.01), both in Zone (her 1st!!) qualifying times. Emily placed 3rd in the 50 free (30.57), 5th in 100 free (1.07.53-JO cut) and 6th in the 100 back (1.17.66-JO cut). Emily’s 100 fly time of 1.15.85 was also a JO cut.
9 year old Erica Iizuka won the 100 breast event with a 1.38.96 time (just .6 over the Zone cut). Erica placed no higher than 6th in the meet: placing 2nd in the 50 breast (45.80-just .21 over the Zone cut), 3rd in the 100 fly (1.29.24) and 6th in the 200 IM (3.15.43-JO), the 50 fly (40.45) and the 50 back (41.80-JO).
12 year old Matt Critchley nabbed a pair of 2nd place finishes: 50 free (29.28) and 50 fly (32.62). Unfortunately for Matt, he ages up literally the day before JO’s! Matt also placed 6th in the 50 breast (40.16).
13 year old Kaitlin Stearns dropped 2.2 seconds to place 2nd in the 200 free (2.15.65). Kaitlin earned her 4th Zone cut with her 3rd place finish in the 400 free (4.44.87-3.8 second drop). Kaitlin also placed 3rd in the 50 free (29.32), 4th in the 100 free (1.03.86) and 5th in the 100 back (1.16.43).
12 year old Alicia Iizuka nailed two 2nd place finishes, both in breast events. In the 50 breast, Alicia’s time was 37.92 while her 100 breast was a 1.20.29.
12 year old Christina Pick dropped time in all 6 of her events as she grabbed a pair of 3rd place finishes: 50 back (35.53) and the 100 back (1.14.08). Christina ages up in the middle of JO’s, so these Zone cuts do not help get her into the meet at Penn State. Christina also placed 4th in both the 200 IM (2.40.91) and the 200 free (2.23.78) and 5th in the 100 fly (1.12.74).
9 year old Sydney Slepian earned two 3rd place finishes: 1) in the 50 back (41.03) and 2) in the 50 breast (45.86). Sydney’s 100 breast time of 1.44.28 and her 200 IM time of 3.18.92 were her 4th and 5th JO cuts.
16 year old Alex Mango continued to push his times down; Alex placed 3rd in the 100 free with a career fastest 54.95, placed 4th in the 200 free with a career best of 1.59.69 and was 8th in both the 50 free (25.98) and 400 free (4.22.77), both career bests.
3 Elite swimmers earned their 1st Zone qualifying times for this summer: 1) 16 year old Lindsey Giostra did the trick in the 100 breast (1.20.63) 2) 15 year old Kathleen McGrath’s 1.12.24 in the 100 back was a zone cut and 3) 12 year old Jimmy Coyne’s 50 breast of 39.28 was zone level. Two swimmers: 12 year old Karen Iizuka (100 breast time of 1.26.11) and 15 year old Isabella Morreale (200 breast-2.53.81) qualified their 2nd Zone times this weekend.
12 year old Isabelle Malinowski earned JO swims in all 5 of her events this weekend. Isabelle went gold in the 50 back (37.22), the 100 fly (1.18.88), the 50 free (31.55), the 200 IM (2.51.82) and the 50 fly (35.00).
14 year old Isabel LaRaia posted her 3 qualifying times this season for Junior Olympics: 1) 100 breast (1.26.51) 2) 200 breast (3.06.46) and 3) 200 free (2.22.85)
9 year old Monica Iizuka will join her 3 sisters at JO’s this summer; Monica qualified in both the 100 back (1.31.79) and the 100 fly (1.38.02).
12 year old Abbie Bigham dropped 8 seconds in her 200 IM (2.52.88) and nearly 10 seconds in her 100 fly to add to JO cuts to her roster (now 5).
14 year old Gabrielle Pick breaststroked to JO’s, earning the qualifying time in both the 100 (1.26.65) and the 200 (3.05.21).
16 year old Matt Ahlmeyer snuck under both the 200 back JO cut time (2..26.05) and the 200 fly cut (2.30.57).
14 year old Avinash Duvvuri posted two JO cuts with his 1.10.65 performance in the 100 back and his 1.23.23 performance in the 100 breast.
The two youngest of long time Elite swimming families earned their 1st career JO swims: 9 year old Joe Pick splashed to a 1.36.05 JO time in the 100 fly while 9 year old Will Stearns grabbed a 50 back JO swim with his 42.36 time in the 50 back.
Three swimmers posted their 1st JO cuts of the summer: 1) 14 year old Charlotte Morrissey dipped under the 200 back standard with her 2.41.37 time 2) 16 year old Krishna Duvvuri earned a swim in the 100 back (1.07.03) 3) 14 year old Jason Steinberg nailed the 200 breast time with a 2.56.39 swim.
12 year old Amy Duren completed her butterfly trifecta, earning her 3rd butterfly JO cut with her 33.59 swim in the 50 fly.
In his new age group, 13 year old Chris Balbo added his 4th JO cut with his 5.27.91 400 IM swim while 11 year old Evan Ng earned his 2nd JO cut, this one in the 100 free (1.10.05).
14 year old Juliet Felsen added her 11th JO swim to her roster, with her 1.24.10 time in the 100 breast.
Complete results are listed on the team website.

ELITE AWARDED LEVEL
2 CLUB RECOGNITION STATUS
BY USA SWIMMING;
USA Swimming has recognized the Elite Swim Club as a Level 2 Club within its Club Recognition Program. A quick search of USA Swimming’s website reveals only 2 teams within NJ Swimming (out of 62) are at this level: Elite and Wyckoff Y. There are about a dozen NJ teams at Level 1. USA Swimming has 4 levels of club recognition.
As a result, Elite will proudly display USA Swimming’s Level 2 Recognition logo on its website and on its letterhead. USA Swimming has already added the Level 2 Recognition logo to its website when a person searches out information regarding Elite: search for Elite at this link: http://www.usaswimming.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=1802&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en.
The Club Recognition Program is one of two programs USA Swimming provides recognizing clubs: the other is the Club Excellence Program. Elite was recognized last June with Level 1 status. Elite applied for Club Excellence last winter, but was not recognized within that program. Elite is taking steps to be recognized as within USA Swimming’s Club Excellence Program this winter.
USA Swimming’s recognition of Elite as a Level 2 team acknowledges the careful planning and implementation of Elite’s strategy as a swim club developing swimmers as well as recognizing Elite as an ongoing business. In order to receive this recognition, Head Coach Bill Deatly and Coach Patty Martin (frankly, Coach Patty spearheaded and coordinated Elite’s effort!) spent dozens of hours preparing and providing documents to USA Swimming describing Elite’s structure and how Elite does what it does at each level within its program. Elite’s ultimate presentation provided USA Swimming with more earned “points” than the minimum requirement for Level 2 Recognition.
Parents and swimmers may have noticed Elite’s recently revised Mission Statement (prominently featured on the website and at the top of this weekly bulletin). This revised Mission Statement is a direct result of the Club Recognition process. Elite’s Mission Statement now precisely and concisely describes Elite’s mission as a professional organization.
Coach Bill will begin the programs preparation for Level 3 Recognition.
DARRAGH TAKES TO THE SEAS (WELL, A RIVER)!
15 year old Darragh O’Gorman, who has previously conquered the San Francisco Bay with a swim from Alcatraz to shore (along with his father David!) and the Jersey Shore (in open water ocean swims last summer), did it again this past weekend by competing an open water race called “Nave-Sink or Swim” in the Navesink River (by Red Back).
Out of 264 swimmers competing in a 1.2 mile course, Darragh placed 13th. overall. Darragh reports “the current was somewhat rough this year, so my time was not much better than last year, but comparatively to the others it was an incredible improvement. I was 3rd in my age group. It was also a really fun thing to compete in it for the second year.”
Here is the
link to the race result: http://raceforum.com/2011/1.2mile.htm.
It appears former Elite swimming parent Sherri Plunkett also competed (placing
77th!!!). Go Sherri!!!

Elite-a-thon, which was the largest in recent memory!! 38 Swimmers spent 2
hours Saturday afternoon swimming to raise money for their own charities!! The
back-to-back successes are a result of Elite swimmers who care about giving
back to the community.
7 year old
Sadie Ordower has raised over $1600 for American Liver
Foundation, showing fabulous support for her sick grandfather. 11 year old Abbie Hartwig has raised $885
(and expects more!).
8 year old Grace Levey raised over $1085 in her spectacular effort to help her friend and neighbor Sydney thru her charity: Make Some Noise. This charity is a foundation that is helping Sydney, who has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Grace reports: “This charity is trying to help find treatments for kids with cancer and let more people know about pediatric cancer. The day of the swim-a-thon was also Sydney's bat mitzvah! I was at her service in the morning. I feel really proud of what I did to help my friend.”
Lindsay Stearns reports that only 7
swimmers have reported results; but the total is at $3,265!! Swimmers are
highly encouraged to email Lindsay with their totals!!

14
year old Lindsay Stearns, who has participated in the Elite-a-thon for each of
her 8 years on the team, took over coordinating the event last year and has
mustered a tremendous amount of enthusiasm each year. If each of the
participants raises just $150 each, the total raised will exceed $5,000. This
shows what the power of enthusiasm can accomplish!!
The
swimmers swam laps for 1 to 2 hours. Some swimmers swam laps, then swam competition relays.
This event, suggested by Elite Swimmer Will Peters 10 years ago, helps develop the “character” portion of Elite’s Mission Statement: Cultivating Excellence in Academics, Character and Swimming.
COLLEGE PAGE ADDED TO WEBSITE:
Coach Patty Martin recently compiled a list of recently graduated Elite swimmers and what schools they attended. This list is now posted on the team website and will be updated each year. Check it out!!
FRIDAY NIGHT & XCEL MEET ON DOCKET;
Elite has completed its entries for summer competition (minus championship meets), adding entries to Friday Night Swim in Bayonne and Meet of XCellence at Princeton University.
All Wave Golds, Wave Blacks and Wave Teals are now entered in the Friday Night Swim meet (Friday, July 8th), at Bayonne’s outdoor municipal pool, with the exception of swimmers who are 10 & under. Friday Night Swim only has 11 & Older events.
Those 10 & Unders not entered into Friday Night Swim will compete on Sunday morning, July 10 at the Meet of XCellence at Princeton University.
Both sets of entries are now posted on the team website.
This summer, all swimmers in the Wave Teals, Wave Blacks, Wave Golds, Senior Preps and Seniors will be entered in Silver & Bronze Competition. These entries will be done in early July (after the Friday Night and Meet of XCellence meets). Swimmers who qualify for Summer Junior Olympics will also be entered into this meet in mid-July.
ELITE’S NEXT MEET HOSTING CHALLENGE: OFF-SITE HOSTING;
CONSTRUCTION AT NA NEXT FALL/WINTER WILL CHANGE PLANS FOR DISTANCE DERBY
& 9-10’S:
Elite’s newest meet hosting challenge: hosting a meet off site from Newark Academy!
Last week, Newark Academy informed Elite that there will be, starting in July, major construction on the building which will significantly reduce the size of the “upper” parking lot during construction. NA has confirmed that Elite’s practice schedule will not be affected by the construction.
Elite has already begun exploring alternative sites to run both Distance Derby (in November) and the 2012 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championship Meet (in February).

SCY INTRA-CLUB
MEET ADDED JUNE 4 AT NEWARK ACADEMY
FOR WAVE TEALS,
MARLIN BLACKS AND MARLIN TEALS;
Elite will hold a SCY Intra-Club competition on Saturday, June 4 at Newark Academy for the Wavebuster Teals, the Marlin Blacks and the Marlin Teals training groups. The meet has been added to the meet schedule on the team website. Entries will be added shortly.
In previous years, these training groups have attended a SCY meet during the spring session. This year, Elite was unable to find an appropriate meet in which to attend. The Elite Intra-Club meet will provide Elite swimmers in these training groups the opportunity to update their SCY times, which will help some swimmers to qualify for early season meets next fall.
Coincidently, MBS will be closed the following day (Sunday, June 5); so this meet will also serve as a practice for the Marlins that weekend.
Since this is an Intra-Club Meet, Elite will need to provide all the timers. Parents will be contacted by the timing coordinators to coordinate the timing assignments for the meet.
ELITE
TO RENT MILLBURN MUNICIPAL POOL THIS SUMMER
FOR
WAVE TEAL & WAVE BLACKS;
MARLIN BLACKS NOW PROVIDED OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN AT MBS
THIS SUMMER:
Millburn has tentatively agreed to rent Elite the Millburn Municipal Pool, located just off Parsonage Hill Road (near JFK Turnpike) during the summer mornings. Elite will be renting the Millburn pool Monday thru Thursday, from 7:15 am to 8:30 am.
The Wavebuster Teals will train all 4 days at Millburn; the Wavebuster Blacks will train at Millburn on Mondays and Wednesdays (alongside the Wavebuster Teals). The Wavebuster Blacks will also train at Springfield Municipal on Tuesdays and Thursdays (as previously set).
Having the Wavebuster Blacks train at Millburn will free up space at Morristown-Beard School on Mondays and Wednesdays which will allow Elite to offer an optional Marlin Black practice on those days. The optional Marlin Black practice will be held from 4 pm to 5 pm. Elite will charge a per practice charge for the Marlin Blacks.
With all changes made at Elite, the ultimate goal is to make the program stronger. The decision to rent the Millburn pool was based upon the following:
1) Last summer, Elite rented the Cromwell Pool in Morristown. While Cromwell provided the space for the Wavebuster Teals to train in during June & July, the pool lanes were not wide enough and the pool was just not large enough to properly accommodate Elite.
2) The Millburn Pool is a recently (within the last 10 years) renovated, 6 lane pool with additional space for coaches to work on stroke technique “outside” the pool lanes.
3) The Millburn Pool is significantly closer to the Springfield Municipal Pool, which will help those families who have swimmers training at each location
4) Renting the Millburn Pool will provide a consistent practice schedule for both the Wavebuster Teals & Wavebuster Blacks as all practices for both these training groups will be held in the am (rather than the alternating am and pm practices the previous summer schedule provided). The one exception is that the Wavebuster Blacks will still be offered a Friday pm practice at MBS
5) The larger Millburn pool allows for Elite to offer two practices a week for the Marlin Blacks at Morristown Beard School, which training group previously had no summer practice time with Elite. This allows more swimmers training with Elite this summer.
The updated Master Schedule for June 20th thru July 27th is now posted on the team website.
PARKING AN ISSUE AT NEWARK ACADEMY:
As we head into the Spring 2011 Session, parents are reminded that there is a distinct shortage of parking spaces at Newark Academy, especially on weekdays between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm. Parents are welcome to “drop off” or “pick-up” their swimmers by the field house entrance during this time period if the driver remains in the car. If a parent is coming into the building, they are requested to park in the “upper” lot and walk thru the school to reach the pool. Newark Academy is also now requesting the cars do not idle. Obviously, if the lot is not crowded, parking in the lower lot is acceptable.
Please remember to drive slowly thru the parking lots and do not park in the fire lanes, as the Livingston Police will ticket improperly parked cars.
PARENTS: PLEASE BE PROMPT IN PICKING UP SWIMMERS:
Parents are requested to be prompt in picking up their swimmers at the end of practice. Recently, especially after the Wave Golds on weekdays and the Wave Teals on Saturday, swimmers have had to wait 30-45 minutes after practice for their ride.
Bill has asked the coaches to remain at practice until the last child has been picked up (for the obvious safety reasons). Coaches are more than willing to do so occasionally. But Elite coaches have other full time jobs and several are attending school in addition to their primary jobs and coaching. It is unfair to ask the coaches to spend an additional 30-40 minutes waiting for parents to pick up their children.
Elite is prompt about ending practice on time. Please help out the coaches by being prompt to pick up your child.
