NEW CUTS:
Following our younger
swimmers’ magnificent championship performances, the Elite 13 -19 year olds swam
brilliantly this past weekend at New Jersey Swimming’s 2011 13 & Older
Silver Bronze Championships held at Rutgers University. Elite was the lead
co-host of the meet (see next article).
This was the largest
meet of the season, with some events having up to 180 combatants. As with prior
Silver Bronze Championships, this was a 2 for 1; there were both Silver and
Bronze Divisions with awards being presented for top finishers based upon their
seed times in each division.
33 different Elite
swimmers placed within the top 8 of their division and 26 swimmers earned
either 5 or 6 best times (out of 6 swims)!!! The stats tell it all, Elite had another
fabulous meet!!
In Silver Division
action, 14 year old Katie McGrath, who has already endured years of shoulder
pain and rehabilitation despite her young age, showed her resilience and cranked
out a winning swim in the 50 free with her 26.32 second performance.
Ironically, this did not get her invited to Junior Olympics in this event as
her time was just .03 over the cut time. McGrath did however score 2 JO swims
this weekend (pushing her total to 4) with her 5th place 400 IM
finish (5.03.32) and her 8th place 200 IM finish (2.22.29). Katie
also placed 6th in the 100 free (58.08).
14 year old Gabrielle
Pick collected 3 new JO swims (for a total of 5) with her 2nd place
400 IM finish (5.00.93) and her two 3rd place finishes (200
IM-2.20.89 and 200 breast (2.43.12). Gabrielle also
earned a 7th place in the 100 breast (1.15.69).
13 year old Isabel
LaRaia notched her 2nd and 3rd JO swim as she placed 2nd
in the 200 breast (2.43.02) and 4th in the 200 IM (2.20.99).
16 year old Lindsey
Giostra rocked her last 50 in the 200 butterfly to move up 4 places and earn
her 3rd JO time. Lindsey placed 3rd with a 2.16.60.
Lindsey also placed 6th in the 400 IM (4.54.58) and 8th
in the 100 fly (1.02.51).
A pair of Elite captains placed 2nd
in their races. 18 year old Maggie Nelson earned her 2nd JO cut with
her 1.01.99 time in the 100 back while also placing 3rd twice (50
free-25.58 & 100 fly (1.01.43), 4th in the 200 fly (2.18.62) and
5th in the 100 free (55.42). In her only swim of the meet, 17 year
old Ali Morreale touched 2nd with a 25.54 time in the 50 free.
13 year old Caroline
Nash dropped 3.5 seconds in her 100 back to go gold; her 1.05.14 time earned
her a 5th place finish and a JO swim. Caroline’s 2.27.94 time in the
200 fly (just moments after her 100 free swim) placed her 3rd but
just short of a JO cut. Caroline also placed 3rd in the 200 back
(2.20.52).
14 year
old Andrea Shepard earned 2nd place finishes in two Silver events.
Andrea’s 19.23.58 time in the 1650 fell just short of the JO cut but earned her
the silver medal while her 200 back swim of 2.20.38 was also a 2nd
place but just short of JO time.
17 year old Ryan Wyer earned two 3rd place finishes (50 free-23.28 & 100 fly-56.09.
16 year old Matthew
Ahlmeyer inched closer to JO’s in 5 of his events, unfortunately to fall just
short in each. Matthew placed 4th in the 200 fly (2.09.32) and 6th
in the 400 IM (4.38.49).
16 year old Krishna
Duvvuri 4th place, 57.29 finish in the 100
back missed JO’s by less than .5. Krishna followed with a 5th place,
1.06.25 time in the 100 breast.
17 year old Sam Duren
chopped 6th seconds off his 200 breast in touching at 2.30.36 and
placed 8th with his 51.36 time in the 100 free.
17 year old Brent Jones
was 5th in the 400 IM (5.06.77) while 17 year old Emmie Lai dropped 1.1 seconds to place 6th in
the 100 fly (1.01.71).18 year old Anthony placed 6th in the 200 back
(2.10.11). 14 year old Juliet Felsen was 7th in the 200 free
(2.05.73).
In Bronze Division
action, 15 year old Isabella Morreale chopped 6 seconds off her previous best
to win the 100 butterfly in 1.05.29. Isabelle also placed 4th in the
100 free, dipping under the magical 1 minute mark for the 1st time
(59.74).
13 year old Camille Relota sliced 3.3 seconds off her 100 back time to win the event in a 1.10.36.
13 year old Morgan
Conley knocked 3.4 seconds from her 100 breast time (1.19.16) to place 2nd
in the event.
13 year old Elizabeth D’Altrui
eliminated 3.2 seconds from her 200 IM time (2.35.18) to place 3rd
overall. 16 year old Greg Macchia was 3 seconds faster in his 100 back (1.02.43)
to earn a 3rd place finish. 13 year old Jason Steinberg whacked 7
seconds off his 200 free time (2.08.21) to finish 3rd. 13 year old Abir Thakur dropped an incredible 12 seconds from his 200
breast time to place 3rd in the 200 breast (2.50.96).
17 year old Mark Berns
sprinted to a 4th place finish in the 50 free (25.56). 15 year old
Clark LaRaia dipped below 2 minutes in the 200 free (1.59.63) for a 4th
place finish. 16 year old Dan Muro clipped 1.5 seconds off his 100 fly time (1.04.28), good enough for 4th. 14 year old
Eugene Ng was 2.7 seconds faster to place 4th in the 100 fly
(1.08.71).
17 year old Lindsay Ellerthrope grabbed 5th place in the 50 free
(27.84). 15 year old Michael Nitting captured 5th place in the 100
back (1.04.20).
15 year old Darragh O’Gorman knocked nearly 8 seconds off his 200 IM
time (2.17.83) to place 6th while also placing 7th in
both the 100 back (1.04.28) and the 100 fly (1.05.18).
13 year old Cullen Walsh
earned a pair of 6 place finishes with his 18.56.87 time in the 1650 and his
5.24.25 time in the 500 free. 13 year old Danielle Peterson was 2.6 seconds
faster in her 200 free (2.16.11) to earn a 6th place finish.
16 year old Lindsay
Behar took nearly a second off her best to place 7th in the 100
breast (1.19.61).

AMAZINGLY, ELITE
PARENTS ALONG WITH MCSC’S PARENTS,
PROVIDES
1724 SWIMMERS WITH 8894 SPLASH OPPORTUNITIES AT
13 & O
SILVER BRONZE;
For the 2nd time in 3 weeks, the Elite parents provided New Jersey Swimmers with thousands of splash opportunities within championship season.
The 2011 13 & Older Silver Bronze Championships, which is the largest meet held within New Jersey Swimming during the season, was the latest Elite Parent masterpiece. Our parents’ efforts, along with Morris County Swim Club’s parents, provided 1724 NJ Swimmers with 8894 splash opportunities at Rutgers University within a 36 hour time frame.
Coupled with the 9-10 Silver Bronze Championships South held 2 weeks ago at Newark Academy, Elite provided 2,272 swimmers with 11,906 “end of the season” splash opportunities.
Along the way, many coaches, parents and swimmers commented on how smoothly each meet was run. Spectacular job, parents!!!
JO RELAYS RE-SHUFFLED: COULD BE RESHUFFLED
AGAIN!
With the exciting and unpredictable swims of the past weekend, the Junior Olympic relays for 13 & Olders have been reshuffled to reflect the new best combinations. All swimmers and parents should double check the relays posted on the website. Please note that performances at JO’s could again alter the relays, as swimmers can force their way onto relays with great JO performances prior to the relays!

HEY, GREAT
SHOT OF YOU!!
DIGITAL PICTURES OF YOUR FAVORITE SWIMMER NEEDED ASAP;
ESCPO is at it again, providing
swimmers at Elite another special moment. This time, ESCPO (Elite Swim Club
Parents Organization) is planning a “memory book” for each swimmer on Elite. Most
swimmers will obtain their memory book at while attending Elite’s Annual Awards
Dinner on Sunday, April 10. ESCPO will pay for the production of this
production with no charge to the swimmers!!
In order to create this memory book,
we need great pictures of your favorite swimmer(s)!! This year, the memory book
is being coordinated by Pam Coyne pamheather@aol.com.
Parents and swimmers can provide pictures to Pam by email, by thumb drive or by
compact disk. Pam needs your pictures this week in order to turn around this
project by the Awards Dinner. One can leave their digital pictures with a coach
in the NA office or give them to Bill at MBS.
ELITE ADOPTS TEAM TRAVEL POLICY TEMPLATE:
At its annual National Convention last September (which Head Coach Bill attended as a delegate from NJ Swimming), USA Swimming adopted a number of rules regarding Athlete Protection. As part of that legislation, USA Swimming created a Model Travel Policy which now requires USA Swimming Clubs to either follow the USA Travel Policy or adopt a Club Travel Policy.
Elite has elected to adopt its own Model Team Travel Policy, which it will modify for specific team sponsored trips such as Sectionals, Junior Nationals and the Senior Training Trip.
The Team Model Travel Policy is now posted on the team website under Athlete Protection. The link is: http://www.eliteswimclub.org/Athlete%20Protection/homepage.htm. Also posted on the website are USA Swimming’s Model Travel Policy and New Jersey Swimming’s Model Travel Policy (which Head Coach Bill helped create).
Parents
should note that Elite will opt not to have chaperones on trips on a go forward
basis. Parents will be welcome to travel to the meets and training trips;
however, they will need to stay at a different hotel than the team on such
trips.

ELITE TO ADD 2
NEW TRAINING GROUPS THIS SPRING:
A SMALL TRAINING GROUP BETWEEN SENIOR
PREPS & WAVE GOLDS &
A PRE-COMPETITION TRAINING GROUP;
Elite will expand during the Spring
2011 Session by adding two training groups to the club. Each group are created to enhance the overall performance of the club.
The creation of these groups will have no affect on the training schedule of
the existing 7 training groups. The Spring 2011
Session training schedule will be identical to the Winter 2010-11 training
schedule.
Starting with the Spring 2011
Session, Elite will promote a very select group of older swimmers (mainly if
not totally Seniors-to-be in High School) into a new training group called the
Senior Preps-2. This training group will train from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at
Morristown-Beard School along with the Seniors and
Senior Preps. This group will consist of 3-10 swimmers and will train in one
lane at a MBS from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
Also
starting in the Spring 2011 Session, Elite will create
a Pre-Elite Program. This Pre-Elite program will actually be two programs in
one:
1) Program #1: For swimmers at the Wavebuster Teal, Marlin Black or Marlin Teal level whom would be turned away at tryouts due to lack of space
within these Elite training groups. By offering these swimmers training in the Spring 2011 (and in the Fall 2011 from Sept thru Nov 15),
Elite will be developing swimmers to enter Elite when room becomes available.
Each year, Elite experiences attrition during the season; this training group
would “feed” the Wavebuster Teals, Marlin Blacks and
Marlin Teal levels during the season when space becomes available. Swimmers in
this group will also be given priority entrance into Elite at the next tryout
if space does not become available during the season.
2) Program #2: For swimmers who are not yet at
the Marlin Teal level. This program will give these swimmers “water time” to
develop their swimming within the structure of Elite’s training system. These
swimmers will also have priority entrance into Elite upon achieving the Marlin
Teal level (when space opens up or at the next tryout).
At the moment, the plan
is for the Pre-Elite program will train 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday and
Friday for 1 hour (4:00 pm to 5:00 pm).
PARENTS: PLEASE BE PROMPT IN PICKING UP SWIMMERS:
Parents are requested to be prompt in picking up their swimmers at the end of practice. Recently, especially after the Wave Golds on weekdays and the Wave Teals on Saturday, swimmers have had to wait 30-45 minutes after practice for their ride.
Bill has asked the coaches to remain at practice until the last child has been picked up (for the obvious safety reasons). Coaches are more than willing to do so occasionally. But Elite coaches have other full time jobs and several are attending school in addition to their primary jobs and coaching. It is unfair to ask the coaches to spend an additional 30-40 minutes waiting for parents to pick up their children.
Elite is prompt about ending practice on time. Please help out the coaches by being prompt to pick up your child.
