C. ALLOCCO, C. BALBO, A. DUREN, P. DUVVURI, V. DUVVURI, KOLOGY (4), MARTIN (2), SEBASTIAN (4), L. STEARNS, STRAND (2) WIN 18 (OF 40) DD EVENTS!!!:

Elite Swimmers and Elite Parents dueled this weekend to see who could outperform each other. The result was stunning performances by everyone involved!!!

10 different Elite swimmers won 18 events (almost half the events offered)! 15 year old (a sophomore) Michael Strand posted another Sectional qualifying time (he now has 7!). Regan Kology and Ryan Sebastian each won 4 events each. 16 Elite swimmers added 26 JO qualifying times. And performance-wise, this is only the tip of the spectacular performance iceberg as the Elite swimmers delivered impressive result after impressive result after impressive result!!!

Meanwhile, back on the pool deck (and at the concession stand, and at the admission table and at the coaches room), the Elite parents performed like a well run special ops military operation; covering every job and task needed to be performed to help the meet run glitch-free. Younger siblings and Senior swimmers also pitched in during the sessions!!!

As a result of this weekend’s action, Elite now has 35 swimmers qualified in 217 events for Junior Olympics (and we are already baring down on last year’s record of 278 qualifying times. In Nov!!!)!!!

Strand won the 200 yard breast event in a 2.14.72 time (2nd place was 12 seconds behind!!!), which (presumably) is a Sectional qualifying time (the 2009 SCY Sectional qualifying times have not yet been posted. This time is under the 2007 SCY time by almost a second). Strand also won the 500 free in 4.59.97.

12 year old training partners Regan Kology and Ryan Sebastian were each one-person wrecking crews, each winning 4 events a piece. Within her 5 best time (of 5 races) performance, Kology demonstrated her aerobic training and versatility by winning the Open 1000 yard free in a 11.04.22 time (which is a 15-18 JO level swim!!), the 400 IM (4.59.95), the 500 free (5.31.76) and the 200 breast (2.45.51). Kology also added (her 18th and final) JO cut in the 200 back (2.30.02). Similar to Kology, Sebastian also won a wide range of events, from the 12 & U 500 Free (5.38.24) to the 200 breast (2.39.67), the 400 IM (4.56.79) and the 200 free (2.08.02).  Sebastian’s 500 free and 200 breast times were new JO cuts (he now has 15 JO cuts and one in every event he has performed while representing Elite!).

16 year old Ricky Martin won both events he swam, the 200 back (2.04.25) and the 200 IM (2.06.36). Martin’s 7 second drop in the IM was a JO qualifying time.

In a mind boggling performance, 10 year old Chris Balbo, swimming the event for the 1st time, won the 12 & Under (yes, 12 & Under!) 200 yard butterfly event in a 2.41.00 time!! This time represents a JO qualifying time for a 12 & Under!! Chris’s swims in the 200 back and 400 IM were also JO level swims for 11-12 year olds!!

16 year old Chelsea Allocco, who has been battling a shoulder injury this fall, pushed aside her difficulties and won the Open 200 breast event in a 2.38.92 time. 15 year old Priya Duvvuri won the Open 200 IM in a best time of 2.18.51.

10 year old Amy Duren churned to a top finish in the 10 & Under 100 butterfly (1.22.47), dropping 4.5 seconds along the way. 12 year old Lindsay Stearns gutted out an impressive win over 11 year old CJAC phenom Helen Grossman in the 200 IM (2.24.65). Venka Duvvuri touched 1st in the Men’s Open 400 IM in a 4.40.83 time!

In going gold in 5 of her 6 events, 12 year old Kara Miller-Radest also had an amazing weekend. Kara placed 4th in the 200 fly (2.43.59) while also getting JO cuts in the 500 free (6.02.51), 200 IM (2.33.56), the 1000 Free (12.27.22) and the 400 IM (5.24.73).

12 year old Matthew Hong added 3 JO qualifying times (he now has 14) with his 2nd place finish in the 200 IM (2.30.09), the 200 breast (2.58.91) and the 500 free (6.07.24). Hong also placed 2nd in the 200 fly (2.42.81) and 3rd in the 400 IM (5.22.25).

11 year old Aaron Levin added two IM events to his total of 5 JO swims, by placing 3rd in the 200 (2.35.84) and 5th in the 400 (5.28.16). Aaron also placed 3rd in the 200 fly (2.49.37). 12 year old Jeffrey Dong added JO cuts in the two events he competed in: the 200 back (2.31.55-a 3rd place finish) and the 400 IM (5.29.62).

3 Elite swimmers posted their 1st Junior Olympic times this year: Karl Melchior, Michael Tortorella & Caroline Watt. For both Watt and Tortorella, these were also career JO firsts!!! Melchior stroked to a 5th place finish in the 200 back (2.36.58) while Watt’s JO performance came in the grueling 400 IM, where she dropped 43 seconds from her previous best to a 5.36.70 time (almost 10 seconds under the cut!). 9 year old Tortorella placed 4th in the 100 breast, stroking to a 1.36.45 time.

12 year old Katie McGrath added her 2nd JO swim in her first try at the 400 IM (5.25.46)-a 7th place finish and 20 seconds under the qualifying time! 14 year old Brendan Miller-Radest’s 7th place finish in the 200 breast earned him his 9th JO swim. Miller-Radest also placed 2nd in the 1000 free (10.35.06).

12 year old Jess Gorham, also swimming the event for the 1st time, posted a JO cut in the 400 IM (5.38.75). 10 year old Matthew Critchley now has a 7th JO swim as a result of his 200 IM (time of 2.59.29) race. Matt also placed 2nd in the 100 IM (1.20.44).

MATTHEW MIGLIOZZI TOURS THE WHITE HOUSE IN ELITE WEAR!!  MEETS CHENEY:

Matthew Migliozzi missed the Monmouth Dual meet last weekend. Instead, he went the White House (yes, that White House!!). He made up for missing the meet by wearing his Elite sweatshirt to his review of the Oval Office, the Cabinet Conference room and the Roosevelt Room. And later on, met up with  Vice President Dick Cheney!!!

Arranged by his father Anthony (who works for the US Treasury Department), Matthew was given an extremely rare opportunity to have a private tour of the West Wing of the White House last Sunday.  They also walked thru the Rose Garden and the Press Room, where a picture of Matthew was taken in his sweatshirt!!

Earlier in the weekend, the Migliozzi’s happened upon Vice President Dick Cheney as his helicopter arrived at the Naval Observatory. Matthew meet the VP and pose for a photo op!!

How about that for an experience!!!

TENTATIVE HOLIDAY PRACTICE SCHEDULE NOW POSTED:

The tentative Holiday Practice is now posted on the website. These schedules are always subject to change, but it is very likely this will be the schedule from Dec 22 thru Jan 4.

….JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE NOT TO LOOK AT OUR PRACTICE SCHEDULE: HIGH SCHOOL MEETS TO DISRUPT PRACTICES:

In December, January and thru the middle of February, high school & middle school swim teams conduct practice and meets at the two pools Elite uses. Incredibly, a total of 7 high school and middle school teams use either Newark Academy or Morristown-Beard School during this time in addition to Elite. What these means to us is that Elite’s practices will be disrupted as meets will encroach into Elite’s practice times.

On days when there are no meets, Elite’s practices will be held at the identical time. However, on those days when a high school or middle school is using one of our pools for a meet, our practices might be shortened at the front end or on the back end. And meets get canceled and rescheduled. So, please continue to check the practice schedule for practice time changes on a daily basis!!

BEST TIME RIBBONS PROVIDED BY ESCPO; SWIMMERS TO RECEIVE THEM AT PRACTICE;

The Elite Swim Club Parents Organization (ESCPO) sponsors and funds a best time ribbon program for the Elite Age Group Swimmers.  This year the ribbons will be distributed by the Training Group Representatives either before or after practice.  All best time ribbons to date for this season will be distributed beginning this week.  Going forward, the ribbons will ready for distribution within a couple of days of the meet results being posted on the website.  If you have any questions regarding the production of best time ribbons, please contact Carolyn Balbo at cbalbo@comcast.net.  The Age Group Training Group Representatives are as follows:

TIMING EMAILS LISTED AS SPAM; PLEASE ADD CAROLYN BALBO AND MARY D’ALTRUI TO YOUR EMAIL LISTS:

Several people informed Carolyn Balbo, one of Elite’s timing coordinators at the meet yesterday that the timing e-mails that she sent out went to their SPAM folder.  Please add both Carolyn’s e-mail address cbalbo@comcast.net and Mary’s D’Altrui’s e-mail md‘altrui@guideline.com to your address books. Hopefully this will prevent future e-mails from going to SPAM Folders.
