This morning, parents and swimmers alike should be proud to be part of the Elite family.

This past Saturday & Sunday, Elite hosted the 6th annual Distance Derby at Newark Academy, providing swimming opportunities for 350 New Jersey Swimmers representing 6 swim clubs (Berkeley Aquatics Club, Central Jersey Aquatic Club, Morris County Swim Club, Sea Dragons Swim Club and The Atlantic Club & Elite). Rising to the occasion were the Elite Parents, who were perfect hosts: organized, hardworking, diligent, and gracious at every turn. Coaches and parents from each team commented how organized and well run the meet was and stated their appreciation for Elite’s efforts.

The Elite swimmers, however, were not gracious. They knock heads with their guests in every heat of every race and came away winning 9 (out of 40) events, earning dozens of Junior Olympic & Silver qualifying times and swimming a best time on virtually every swim. The swimming results equaled (or possibly exceeded) the Elite parents efforts:

            1) Chris Dart (200 Fly, 400 IM), Katie Gorman (500 Free), Regan Kology (1000 Free), Ricky Martin (200 Free), Alex Morrison (200 IM & 500 Free), Michael Strand (1000 Free) each won events.

            2) 13 Elite swimmers posted 24 new Junior Olympic qualifying times, bringing Elite’s JO totals to 27 swimmers and 121 events. Last year after Distance Derby, Elite’s JO squad was comprised of 15 swimmers with 79 events. Elite is well on its way of surpassing last year’s JO squad of 32 swimmers and 178 events.

Elite started the meet with bang as Katie Gorman won the first event with a blistering 6.00.08 time in the 12 & Under 500 Free. Gorman was followed 3 Elite swimmers: 2nd place finisher Andrea Shepard (6.05.71), 3rd place finisher Lindsay Stearns (6.17.26) & 4th place finisher Sarah Weinbrom (6.32.45). The 12 & Under Elite boys responded by Matt Alymeyer winning the next event- 2 & 500 Free in a 6.01.60 time. Almeyer was followed by 2nd place finisher Zachie Katz (6.26.84), 3rd place finisher Richard Yu (6.28.06) and 5th place finisher Aaron Levin (6.34.75).

Two of the most impressive Elite performances were: 1) 11 year old Regan Kology winning the Open 1000 Free in an 11.56.78 time and 2) the Boys 12 & U 200 breast, were 4 Elite boys qualified for JO’s: Jeff Dong (2.57.95), Katz (2.59.68), Yu (3.02.33) & Ryan Buckham (3.03.34).

            Other performances of note:

5)      9 year old Kaitlin Stearns continued her amazing progression by adding 2 JO swims (she now has 9 events) in the 200 Free and 100 fly

PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGES (SLIGHTLY) NOVEMBER 15 FOR MARLINS & WAVE BLACKS….

Swimmers and Parents are reminded that the practice schedule will change come Monday, November 19. The changes will affect the Marlin Teals, the Marlin Blacks and the Wavebuster Black training groups.

Starting Thursday, November 15, Newark Academy’s high school and middle schools will begin training for their winter competitions. To accommodate NA, the immediate effect will be that the Marlin Teals and Marlin Blacks will “lose” 15 minutes of training (actually, we added 15 minutes of training in September and October and just revert back to the original practice schedule) and begin training at 5:15 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays.

In addition, on those Saturdays when they are not competing the Wave Blacks practice will now be held from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm and at Morristown-Beard.

….JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE NOT TO LOOK AT OUR PRACTICE SCHEDULE: HIGH SCHOOL MEETS TO DISRUPT PRACTICES:

In December, January and thru the middle of February, high school & middle school swim teams conduct practice and meets. Incredibly, a total of 7  high school and middle school teams use either Newark Academy or Morristown-Beard School during this time. What these means to us is that Elite’s practices will be disrupted as these meets will encroach into Elite’s practice times.

On days when there are no meets, Elite’s practices will be held at the same time. However, on those days when a high school or middle school is using one of our pools for a meet, our practices might be shortened at the front end or on the back end.

Thus, please check the practice schedule for practice time changes on a daily basis!!

SWIM MEET “LOST & FOUND” BROUGHT BACK TO NA; PLEASE CHECK YOUR ITEMS AT HOME:

As anyone at Princeton this weekend knows, the crowded situation at meets creates a ripe situation where items are going to be left, lost or accidentally picked up by other swimmers. Swimmers and parents should know the following:

1)      Items easily identified as Elite’s that are left at the meet are brought back to Newark Academy and placed in the lost & found.

2)      Items with names on them are much more easily identifiable. If not already done so, write your name on all swim gear and team uniform items so they can get back to you.

3)      As a courtesy to your fellow swimmers, please check the items you bring home to confirm they are actually yours. You may have accidentally picked up someone else’s uniform, suit or goggles.
