Coaches hope for solid performances at the start of a season to help continue the early season enthusiasm swimmers have. Solid performances create momentum. What does spectacular results produce at the start of a season? We shall soon see!!!

Elite started the competitive season with a bang this past weekend, competing in the Hall-o-ween Classic Meet at Seton Hall University against 13 other teams. 8 different Elite Swimmers won a total of 13 events!!! And 10 different swimmers chalked up 16 new Junior Olympic times!! Elite’s JO totals are now at 29 swimmers in 162 events (we have already added 3 individuals in 30 events since Sept!!!).

10 year old Chris Balbo treated the SHU pool as his own personal playground, as he won 4 of his 6 events (200 free-2.24.30, 50 back-36.34, 50 fly-34.78 & 100 IM-1.17.39) and placed 2nd in his two other events (50 free-30.49 & 50 breast-42.41)!!!! All 6 swims were personal bests (since he has already qualified for each event offered 10 & Unders, each of his swims were below the JO qualifying times). Interestingly, Chris has excelled in the past in distance events, and 4 of his swims were 50s!!

10 year old Kaitlin Stearns and 12 year old Ryan Sebastian followed closely behind Balbo, by winning two events a piece. Stearns opened the meet with a blistering 28.83 50 free win and then followed up with a win in the 200 free (2.22.83). Stearns, who has worked hard to overcome her personal issues with the breaststroke, scored a 4th place & JO cut in the 100 breast (1.34.38). Kaitlin also finished 3rd in both the 50 fly (35.36) & the 100 IM (1.15.23).

12 year old Ryan Sebastian, who joined Elite in September, lived up to his reputation of being an excellent swimmer by winning two events: 200 free (2.10.21) & the 50 fly (27.98). Not one to back off, Ryan placed 2nd in three of his other events:  50 free-26.60, 50 back-29.19 & 100 IM-1.04.96. Ryan placed 3rd in his remaining event: the 50 breast (35.00)-behind Jeffrey Dong & Zach Katz-Elite Swimmers (yes, Elite went 1-2-3 in the boys 11-12 50 breast)!!!

10 year old Andrea Galea nearly equaled her teammate Kaitlin Stearns performance by winning 1 event and finishing 2nd in her 5 other events!! Galea won the 50 back in a 33.41 time. Galea placed 2nd in the 50 Free-29.36 (just behind Stearns), 50 breast (40.92), 200 free-2.25.00 (again, just behind Stearns!), 50 fly (33.41) & the 100 IM (1.14.02).

16 year old Adam Weinbrom, new to the team this summer, rocked the 200 back event by dropping 16 seconds to win the event (2.08.37). Adam also placed 4th in the 500 free (5.28.34 (a 19 second drop) and 5th in both the 100 breast (1.17.81) and the 100 fly (1.01.23).

12 year old phenom Regan Kology continued right from where she left off this summer, by winning the 100 IM (currently a secondary event for her) in a 1.07.05) time. Regan had 6 best times, placed no lower than 6th and placed 3rd in the 100 back (1.08.36) and the 50 back (31.43)-all in JO qualifying times (the back swims were new qualifying times for Regan).

10 year old Caroline Nash won her first career event in NJ Swimming by churning to a 1.16.11 time. Caroline ages up in November, but this weekend’s fly performance is not far off an 11-12 JO qualifying time. Caroline also placed 4th in both the 200 free (2.30.98) & 50 back (35.73). Nash was also 6 for 6 in best times!

12 year old Jeffrey Dong continued his breaststroke excellence (Jeff qualified for Eastern Zones this past summer in all 3 breast events) by winning the  50 breast (33.82)-just besting two Elite teammates. Jeff had 5 JO times, including a new one in the 100 fly (1.13.70).

10 year old Matthew Critchley, who is also new to Elite this season, is quickly emerging as a top notch swimmer. Matthew finished 2nd in 3 separate events: 50 back (37.40), 100 breast-1.33.92) and the 100 IM-1.20.70. All three swims were new JO qualifying times for Critchley.

12 year old Matthew Hong was also on fire this weekend, placing 2nd in the 50 fly (29.67), 3rd in the 200 free (2.14.99), 4th in the 50 back (31.91) and 5th in the 100 IM (1.10.11). The 200 free and 100 IM were new JO cuts for Matthew, who now has 6 JO swims.

11 year old Aaron Levin, ignoring being at the bottom of his age group, posted 2 Junior Olympic qualifying times in his backstroke events: 100 back (1.12.56 & a 4th place finish) and the 50 back (33.68).  Aaron also placed 7th in the 200 free (2.20.35).

12 year old Katie McGrath posted her 1st career JO qualifying time this weekend, placing 8th in the 50 back (32.17). Katie also dropped 20 seconds in the 200 free swim.

11 year old Zach Katz, who placed 2nd between Dong and Sebastian in the 50 breast, added his 9th JO swim to his resume with a 6th place finish in the 50 back-33.59. Katz also placed 3rd in the 50 fly (again, behind Sebastian and Hong-yes Elite went 1-2-3 in the 11-12 boys 50 fly also!!!).

12 year old Andrea Shepard earned her 10th JO cut time, this one in the 100 butterfly (1.12.09) in placing 9th.

COACH MATT KING PLACES 12TH IN 5 MILE CARIBBEAN OCEAN SWIM!!

Like a 1950’s style super hero, Elite Coach Matt King does it all: works, studies, volunteers and trains. Last weekend, Matt traveled to the Caribbean to relax from his busy schedule; and to compete in a 5 mile open water ocean race!!! In the 13th Annual Coral Reef 5 Miles Duggen Reef to the Buccaneer Swim off St. Croix, Virgin Island and out of 85 swimmers, Matt finished 12th in an impressive 2 hours 22 minutes and 39 seconds!  Results can be viewed at http://virginislandspace.org/coralreefresults08.htm.

Apparently, being a former Elite star (Matt still holds several top 10 times in the 13-14 and 15 & older age groups and was one of the first of many Elite swimming studs) and being captain of Rowan University Swim Team (along with fellow Elite swimmer Frank DiGiacomo) are not enough swimming accomplishments for Matt. So virtually every night, Matt gets into to the water and trains (most nights you can see him splashing away with the Seniors –and in the fastest lane with 16 year old Michael Strand, one of the fastest high school swimmers in the state).

When not swimming, Matt works for Veeco Compound Semiconductor, Inc. as an R&D Scientist Monday thru Friday. Matt is also pursuing a PhD at Stevens Tech in Hoboken for Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer (a branch of Mechanical Engineering) at night (Wednesdays are classes). Matt formerly taught math at Randolph High School. Matt is also tutoring several Elite swimmers in math on the weekends!!

Matt will be participating in several open water swims this summer on the Jersey Shore. With Matt’s guidance, Bill will be exploring the possibility of Elite Swimmers chasing after Matt in the ocean this summer!!

How’s that as a role model for young swimmers???

TWO UNEXPECTED AND INTERESTING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ELITE SWIMMERS:

Being among the best usually provides unexpected and interesting opportunities. Here are two for Elite Swimmers to explore:

Olympian in the neighborhood: Gary Hall, jr at Drew University on Nov 15th:

Three time Olympian Gary Hall Jr. will be hosting a seminar at Drew University to raise awareness for World Diabetes Day. Hall will conduct a two hour clinic with a swim-a-thon at the end to raise money for diabetes on November 15th at 10am.  All the proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Fund.

Gary has challenged those who want to attend to raise $15,000 for this event!!

Attached to this memo are the registration and donation forms.

Journalism Internships Available with Swimming World/BAC Long Course January Meet:

With the overwhelming success of the Summer 2008 Bejing Olympics and what swimming as a sport provided, Swimming World and joined forces with Berkeley Aquatics Club to provide journal internships involving the BAC Long Course Winter Meet (formerly known as the Burgdorff Invitational) this coming January.

Those who are pick will have an opportunity to interview Olympians, be involved in producing content for Swimming World’s magazine and website, and interact with the Swimming World Staff.

Forms for applying for the internship are attached to this memo.

TIMING EMAILS LISTED AS SPAM; PLEASE ADD CAROLYN BALBO AND MARY D’ALTRUI TO YOUR EMAIL LISTS:

Several people informed Carolyn Balbo, one of Elite’s timing coordinators at the meet yesterday that the timing e-mails that she sent out went to their SPAM folder.  Please add both Carolyn’s e-mail address cbalbo@comcast.net and Mary’s D’Altrui’s e-mail md‘altrui@guideline.com to your address books. Hopefully this will prevent future e-mails from going to SPAM Folders.
