THOSE BOOMING FIREWORKS YOUR HEARD THIS
WEEKEND HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED:
ELITE SWIM
PERFORMANCES AT JO’S & BRONZE:
Following up on the past two weeks of exceptional performances, Elite Swim Club performed like a perfect 4th of July fireworks finale at the New Jersey LCM Junior Olympics and LCM 13 & Older Bronze Championships this weekend.
Despite being held at different ends of the state (Piscataway and Bayonne), everyone at both venues knew Elite was in the building. Compared to other championship meets in the impressive 11-year history of Elite, this weekend’s performance is simply unmatched. At no other time has so many swimmers performed so brilliantly, repeatedly.
Junior Olympics Summary:
TEN separate Elite Swimmers performed Zone Qualifying times. The 10 & U Girls WON BOTH the 200 Medley and 200 Free Relays. An additional Sectional Cut was earned. As a team, Elite placed 11th overall by scoring 593 points (with its best swimmer, Chris Dart swimming only 4 events as he rests for Junior Nationals). Last year with Chris Dart scoring 174 points on his way to winning high point award for 13-14 Boys, Elite scored just 219 points in placing 21st.
Priya Duvvuri lead the way for Elite as she performed magnificently every time she swam. Priya won both the 50 back (34.05 by over a second from her next competitor) and the 50 fly (32.33), placed 2nd in the 100 back (1.14.79), placed 3rd in the 100 fly (1.14.23), 4th in the 50 free (30.39) and 7th in both the 200 fly (2.55.94) and the 200 IM (2.45.90). Priya placed 4th in the high point award for the 11-12 Girls!!!
Priya, as will as 7 other Elite swimmers (see below), will be representing New Jersey Swimming at the Eastern Zone Age Group All Star Swimming Competition held in Buffalo next week in 5 events (50 back, 100 back, 50 fly, 100 fly and 50 free).
Equally impressive was the collective performance by the Elite 10 & Under Girls. Courtney Brosnan, Katie Gorman, Regan Kology and Lindsay Stearns simply lit up JO’s with their swimming:
The four combined to earn 80 points for Elite in winning the only 10 & Under Relays. In winning the 200 Free Relay, lead off swimmer Katie Gorman earned a Zone qualifying time of 33.85. The team swam 7 seconds faster than their pre-meet seedtime!!! In winning the 200 Medley Relay, the foursome again dropped more than 7 seconds and won by over 4 seconds!!
Individually, the young girls also shined as all 4 qualified for Zones for the 1st time:
Courtney Brosnan placed 5th in the 100 free in qualifying for Zones. Courtney also placed 10th in 4 events (200 IM, 50 fly, 200 free & 50 back), 11th in the 100 fly and 16th in the 50 free in earning 49 points for Elite.
Katie Gorman placed 7th in 50 breast (Zone Cut), 12th in 4 events (100 breast, 50 free, 100 free & 50 fly) and 16th in the 200 free.
Regan Kology placed 8th in the 50 Free (Zone Cut), 9th in the 200 Free, 11th in the 100 free and 13th in the 50 breast.
Lindsay Stearns place 5th in the 50 fly (Zone Cut) and 12th in both 200 IM and the 100 fly.
Elite’s “two Michaels” also got into the high placing and scoring act:
12 year old Michael Li added to his Zone resume by improving two of his cut times and adding a third. In the 100 breast, Michael cruised to a 2nd place finish (1.22.94). In placing 4th in the 200 breast (3.01. 37), Michael added a swim next week and he improved his 50 breast time as well in placing 5th. Michael also placed 12th in 50 fly.
14 year old Michael Strand followed suit by also improving two of his cuts and adding a 3rd. event at Zones. This Michael dropped time in placing 5th in both 100 back (1.08.60) and the 200 back (2.29.13). Michael also showed off his conditioning in qualifying for Zones in the grueling 400 IM (5.19.42& placing 7th. Michael also placed 7th in the 100 breast and 11th in 200 IM in tallying 58 points!
12 year old Greg Keiser continued his dramatic development in qualifying for Zones in his 2nd favorite stroke: butterfly. Keiser fancies himself as a breaststroker and at JO’s, he placed 9th in the 50. But it was his 6th place finish in the 50 fly that will send him to Zones next week.
Venkatesh Duvvuri added impressive swims in the 100 & 200 butterfly, placing 8th in the 200 (2.34.70) and 9th in the 100 (1.08.86).
Tad Deatly, having just qualified for JO’s last weekend at Silvers, placed 15th in both!
Chris Dart (remember him?) participated in a modified meet schedule as he rests for his Junior National performance in 10 days. Swimming in just 4 events, Chris swam best times in each event as he placed 3rd in the 200 IM, 5th in the 200 back, 6th in the 100 breast (new sectional cut time) and 7th in the 100 fly.

DEPOSITS TO SECURE WINTER 2006-07 ROSTER SPOTS DUE AUGUST 1ST
(TOMORROW!!!)
Information regarding the Winter 2006-07 Season was mailed in mid June to each Elite swimmer whom participated in the Spring 2006 Session. That information provided the master schedule (identical to this spring’s schedule), the training group that a swimmer is slated for and the cost of the Winter 2006-07 Session.
Receipt of the $200 deposit will 1) reserve a spot for the swimmer on the Winter 2006-07 training roster 2) will trigger the purchase of the team uniform (suit, t-shirts and sweatshirts) for that swimmer and 3) allow Elite to understand the training group size vis a viz tryouts (slated for Monday, July 24 at Morristown-Beard School at 4 pm).
The deposit is non-refundable. Swimmers who do not get their deposit in on time will not be included on Elite’s fall roster and will need to tryout again for the team in Sept.
The list of those swimmers who have sent in their deposits and are on the Elite roster is posted on the website under Tryouts 2006-07.
WAVE TEALS,
MARLIN BLACKS & MARLIN TEALS:
SUGGESTED SUMMER
WORKOUTS ON WEBSITE;
AWARDS TO BE
PRESENTED FOR THE “OVER 20” CLUB:
For those Wave Teals, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teals who are “Stud-like” rather than “Slug-like,” Leighann and Bill have posted suggested workouts on Elite’s website (under Summer Workouts) for swimmers in these training groups to perform throughout the summer season.
To help motivate these swimmers, Elite will provide awards (to be announced) for swimmers who complete 20 or more of these workouts (parents are requested to closely monitor the dates the workouts and type of workouts that were performed).
While most of the Wave Teal, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teal swimmers will participate at workouts and meets with their local swim clubs, doing an extra workout each day will help keep Elite swimmers practicing their body position drills and building their conditioning. These workouts are designed to remind the swimmers to stay long in the LA (LA= long axis-free & back) strokes and to get their bodies into the SA (SA= short axis-breast & fly) strokes. These workouts should be done routinely to help reminding the swimmers (and their bodies) how to swim properly.
This week, Bill will post a calendar so that swimmers and parents can keep track of the dates and the workout performed. Let’s see how many awards Elite can present next fall!!!
