DART’S NEWEST CHALLENGE MET:

SWIMMING TIRED YET EXCELLING AT SECTIONALS:

            One of the biggest challenges a top-notch swimmer faces is deciding what meet to “taper/rest” for during the training session. The decision becomes extremely difficult when the meets are literally weeks apart, as swimmers generally can not “hold” a taper for an extended period of time.

            Such was the dilemna that Chris Dart faced once he qualified for Junior Nationals in the 100 back. Do you rest for Sectionals and swim fast in 5 events two weeks before Jr. Nats, or do you “swim thru” Sectionals and rest for your single 1 minute event at Jr. Nats?

            For Chris, the decision was relatively easy as his current 100 LCM back time places him within the top 25 in the entire country in the 15-16 age group. To do well at Jr. Nats is his primary goal this summer.

            However, this decision had consequences, as Chris literally finished his hard summer training (11 practices a week) the day before flying to Buffalo to compete in the Eastern Zone “Super” Sectionals (Super means both eastern zones competed at a single meet rather than two different meets, which is normal).

            Despite being extremely tired, Chris performed best times in 4 of his 6 swims. Ironically, the only two non-best times were his 100 back swims, where he finished 9th in the am preliminaries and 13th overall.

            Chris posted his best times in the 200 IM (2.15.93), the 50 free (25.76), the 200 back (2.15.44), and the 400 IM (4.51.27).

WAVE TEALS, MARLIN BLACKS & MARLIN TEALS:

SUGGESTED SUMMER WORKOUTS ON WEBSITE;

AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED FOR THE “OVER 20” CLUB:

            For those Wave Teals, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teals who are “Stud-like” rather than “Slug-like,” Leighann and Bill have posted suggested workouts on Elite’s website (under Summer Workouts) for swimmers in these training groups to perform throughout the summer season.

            To help motivate these swimmers, Elite will provide awards (to be announced) for swimmers who complete 20 or more of these workouts (parents are requested to closely monitor the dates the workouts and type of workouts that were performed).

            While most of the Wave Teal, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teal swimmers will participate at workouts and meets with their local swim clubs, doing an extra workout each day will help keep Elite swimmers practicing their body position drills and building their conditioning. These workouts are designed to remind the swimmers to stay long in the LA (LA= long axis-free & back) strokes and to get their bodies into the SA (SA= short axis-breast & fly) strokes. These workouts should be done routinely to help reminding the swimmers (and their bodies) how to swim properly.

            This week, Bill will post a calendar so that swimmers and parents can keep track of the dates and the workout performed. Let’s see how many awards Elite can present next fall!!!
