ELITE NEWS BULLETIN               7-21-08

15 YEAR OLD MICHAEL STRAND PLACES 15TH IN BACK FINALS AT SUPER SECTIONALS, PLACES 23RD IN 400 IM, DROPS TIME IN 200 IM, 100 FLY:

As Elite’s lone representative at the 2008 LCM Super Sectionals held outdoor at Penn State University, 15 year old Michael Strand raced to a 15th place finish in the 100 backstroke on Saturday night, posting a 1.01.74 time. The swim was slightly slower than his prelim swim of 1.01.57 (which was just .01 off his best).

Swimming 8 times in 4 days, Michael also finaled and placed 23rd overall.in the 400 IM, when he virtually duplicated his prelim swim of dropping 10 full seconds. Michael's final’s time was 4.55.39, just over his am swim of 4.54.74. Michael also dropped time in his100 butterfly (1.01.57) and his 200 IM time (2.18.70).

A "Super" Sectionals Meet is when the Zone (in this case, the Eastern Zone) holds a single Sectional meet rather than 2 Sectional level meets. Thus, the qualifying times for a "Super" Sectional are even more stringent than a regular Sectional meet.

Michael also competed in the 200 breast (2.40.38, .1 over his best time) and the 200 back (his only subpar performance).

V. DUVVURI, WYER WIN EVENTS AT 13 & O SILVERS:

P. DUVVURI, JONES, LI, MILLER-RADEST, MORREALE & WYER ADD 10 JO CUTS

FOR JO’S: 38 SWIMMERS HAVE NOW QUALIFIED IN 243 EVENTS:

16 year old Venkatesh Duvvuri and 14 year old Ryan Wyer each won butterfly events this past weekend at New Jersey Swimming’s 13 & Older Silver Championships held at Rutgers University. Going into Junior Olympics, Elite has qualified 38 individual swimmers in 243 events.

Wyer, who has developed nicely this past year and posted his first Zone qualifying time last month, won the 200 fly event in a 2.31.00 time. Wyer also placed 4th in both the 400 free (4.52.12) and the 200 IM (2.37.48). All three times were new JO cut times for Ryan, for a total of 7.

Duvvuri dropped .85 seconds off his previous best to place first in the 15 & Older 100 fly (1.04.42). The victory was bittersweet though, as Venkatesh fell just .13 short of a JO qualifying time. Venkatesh has already qualified in the 200 fly. Venk also placed 3rd in the 100 back.

14 year old Brent Jones used his last opportunity to qualify for JO’s in both the 100 and 200 breast events. Jones’s 200 breast (3.00.77) effort placed him 3rd while his 100 breast race (1.21.68) put him 4th.

Known for her sprinting ability, 14 year old Priya Duvvuri showed off her conditioning by placing 3rd in the 1500 meter free (20.31.81) and 9th in the 800 free (10.33.15). Both times were under the JO qualifying standards.

14 year old Michael Li added his 6th JO swim to his resume, when he placed 2nd in the 100 back with a 1.12.44 time. 15 year old Ali Morreale (who just aged-up earlier this month) added her 2nd JO breast cut, with a 1.22.88 and 3rd place performance. 14 year old Brendan Miller-Radest continued to show off his distance prowess, this time adding the 200 fly (2.39.87) to his JO swims next week (5 total).

HOW COOL IS THIS? A LITTLE SWIMMING HISTORY:

As reprinted from the letters to the Editor in the Independent Press, July 15, 2008:

            Memories of the 1964 Olympics

This evening as I was watching the Olympic swimming trials, it brought to my mind an article that was in your (Independent Press) March 5 issue, with the headline Chatham High School swimmer makes Olympic tryouts. I congratulate Chris Dart on his accomplishment; however, he was not the first.

In 1964, our daughter Sally Lundt, a 14 year old middle school student in the Chatham Township school system, qualified to try out for the Tokyo Olympics. She indeed did try out; however, was not selected for the Olympic Team.

While Sally coached at Minisink, Bill Deatly was one of her best swimmers. I am pleased that he is still involved and coaching swimming.

Sally has lived in Natick, Mass., for many years and continues to swim as her exercise of choice.

            Alice B. Lundt, Chatham.

Will there be an Elite/Chatham connection to the 2052 Olympics? We will have to see……
