For Elite, the Summer 2010 Long Course Championship Season began with a bang this past weekend!! Between the 12 & Under Silver-Bronze Championship Meet held at Rutgers and the 13 & Older Bronze Championships held in Bayonne, Elite won 18 events, collected 24 new Junior Olympic qualifying times and pushed the team JO totals for long course to a new high water mark in both individual swimmers qualifying- 51 and in total amount of JO qualifying times: 248!!

12 & Under Silver Bronze Championships:

Led by the 400 free swimmers (6 of Elite’s 400 swimmers qualified for JO’s), Elite swam brilliantly despite a 30% increase in the meet size compared to last summer’s meet (this increase created long sessions-especially for the 11-12s. 3 Elite swimmers won Silver events, one won a Bronze event and 14 different swimmers added 24 JO cuts-including 3 swimmers earning their first of this summer. This has pushed the JO team totals to 51 swimmers (last year & previous high: 50) in 248 events (last year & previous high 235). Elite has one more meet this summer (the 13 & Silver Championships) to increase these totals.

9 year old Grace Xu, in her first career 400 free swim, rocketed to a 1st place in the Silver Division with a 5.46.30 time (less than 6 seconds away from a Zone cut!).

10 year old Katy Shepard won the Silver Division 50 free with a 35.98 time (Elite went 1-2-4 in the event), placed 3rd in the 200 free (2.50.15-a 9 second drop) and 4th in the 400 free (her 1st career 400 free) with a 6.11.56 time. All 3 swims were JO cuts.

10 year old Claire Xu dropped 3 seconds in the 50 back (40.13) to place 1st. Claire’s swim was just .04 over the Zone qualifying time. Claire followed up with a 7th place finish in the 100 breast 1.46.83).

12 year old Christina Pick was spectacular, cranking out 4 new JO cuts (her total is now 7). Christina dropped 13 seconds in the 400 free (5.18.47) to place 2nd, placed 5th in both the 200 free (2.32.32) and the 100 back (1.20.58) and 7th in the 50 back (37.59).

9 year old Emily Fu, a newcomer to Elite this spring, earned her 1st and 2nd JO cuts this weekend. Emily placed 2nd in the Silver Division in the 100 breast with a 1.44.26 performance and placed 7th in the 50 breast with her 49.17 time.

10 year old Evan Ng, also swimming the 400 free for the 1st time, placed 3rd in dipping below the 6 minute mark with his 5.54.59 JO cut time. Evan also went gold in the 100 butterfly with his 1.35.16 time-good enough for 2nd place.

12 year old Camille Relota, placed in the Bronze Division based upon her time from last year (and she had not yet competed in it this summer), was a torpedo in the 100 back in dropping 14 seconds to a JO cut of 1.19.95. Because she went gold from the Bronze Division, Camille was not allowed to place but her time was the 3rd fastest of the meet! Camille also grabbed the 50 back JO time with her 37.28, 6th place finish. Camille also placed 6th in the 100 breast (1.44.13).

10 year old Brandon Li added his 6th and 7th JO swim to his roster of events. Brandon’s 1.33.64 time in the 100 back was a 5th place finish while his 6.20.16, 400 free swim (also a first time swim) was good enough for 10th.

12 year old Morgan Conley, who just missed JO qualifying times in 3 earlier events, brushed aside her frustration and produced gold in her 50 back swim of 37.79.

10 year old Katherine Friday placed 2nd (just behind Shepard) to earn a JO qualifying time in the 50 free (36.04). 11 year old Rachel Hong snagged a JO cut in the 50 back with her 37.03 time. The swim was good enough for 3rd place.

12 year old Jared Kovacs grabbed his 3rd JO qualifier (all in the breast) with his 9th place, 3.24.22 time in the 200 breast. 12 year old Caroline Nash earned her 12 JO qualifying time with her 1.20.11, 3rd place masterpiece in the 100 back.

10 year old Vivian Xia, another 1st timer in the 400 free, earned 5th place with a 6.18.30 time. This is Vivian’s 8th JO qualifying time. Vivian also placed 4th in the 50 free (behind Shepard and Friday) and was just short of another JO cut (.2).

12 year old Avinash Duvvuri dropped 53 seconds in his 200 IM (2.55.60) to place 1st overall in the Bronze Division. Avinash also placed 6th in both the 200 free (2.42.84) & 6th in the 50 free (32.24) and 7th in the 100 fly (1.34.89).

1)      10 year old Andrew Huang placed 3rd in the Silver Division of the 50 fly (43.26)

2)       8 year old Erica Iizuka placed 4th in the Silver Division in the 100 butterfly (1.41.02) and 5th in the 50 fly (42.96). Both swims were just short of the JO cut.

“SOFT SELLING” ELITE IS LIFEBLOOD OF CLUB;

BILL AVAILABLE FOR CLINICS AT SUMMER CLUBS

Summer Swim Teams are the lifeblood of year round swim clubs like Elite. Swimmers who enjoy the training and competition of their summer clubs form the vast majority of new swimmers into “winter” or “club” swimming.

The expected terrific swimming performed by Elite swimmers this coming summer in their dual meet and championship competition will be the main selling point of the club. Elite swimmers will be among the best (if not the best) swimmers in their races. They should be, they have worked hard and have earned that right!!

Parents of Elite swimmers are requested to “soft-sell” Elite; meaning they should await an approach by an interested swimmers/parents, but then earnestly provide information to such people upon their approach. Elite parents and swimmers are highly encouraged to point perspective swimmers to the team website and to instruct interested parties to email Bill regarding questions about the club.

As in past summers, Head Coach Bill is available to provide a swim clinic at local summer clubs. If your summer club or summer swim coach has an interest in a clinic by Bill, please contact Bill to set up a clinic date!

COMING THIS FALL: PARENT WORKSHOPS: 1st DATE IS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND

In an effort to educate parents about swimming and Elite’s philosophy, Head Coach Bill will conduct a Parent Workshop once a month during the Winter 2010-11 Training Season at Newark Academy. The initial workshop will be Wednesday, September 22.

The workshops are meant to educate the Age Group Parents as to the sport of swimming. Each workshop will consist of a lecture regarding a specific topic (like nutrition) and will have time set aside for general questions. On the first date, there will also be a 2nd workshop specifically for Marlin parents in introduce them to the sport of swimming.

RISING SENIORS (IN HIGH SCHOOL), JULY AND AUGUST ARE THE “OFFICIAL COLLEGE ESSAY MONTHS!!!:

All rising Seniors in high school should take advantage of some down-time and prepare your college essay this summer. July and August are “Official College Essay Months!!!

1st semester Seniors have a tremendous workload in addition to being under a tremendous amount of stress. 1st semester Seniors have: 1) college visits (swimmers may have college recruiting visits that last Friday thru Sunday) 2) SAT preparation 3) preparing college applications 4) keeping up their grades (colleges will want to see the 1st semester grades) and 4) swimming workload (college coaches expect swimmers to be training at their usual full schedule).

Thus, organizing and writing one’s college essay during the “down” months of July and August is extremely productive and wise.
