HARD WORK (ALL YEAR), PATIENCE (YESTERDAY) ENABLE ELITE YOUNGSTERS TO TAME LONG COURSE SILVERS:

Despite competing in the most grueling venue swimming has to offer plus overcoming 3 separate one hour lightning delays (yesterday), the Elite 12 & Unders none the less were equal to the challenges set forth and swam brilliantly this past weekend at the 12 & Under Silver/Bronze Long Course Championships.

For many, this weekend’s meet was the first time the swimmers had ever seen, much less trained or competed in a long course pool. Undaunted (and enduring yesterday’s 8 hour afternoon session hampered by the lightning delays), almost every Elite swim the entire weekend was faster than the swimmer’s seed time.

Being the last chance to qualify for Long Course Junior Olympics (to be held in two weeks), SIX Elite swimmers were up to the task of qualifying for JO’s and FOUR separate Elite swimmers won their events outright!

On Saturday, Maggie Nelson started the Elite winning ways by touching 1st in the Girls 11-12 100 meter backstroke in a 1.22.31. Maggie later added a JO cut time in the 200 back with a 7th place finish of 3.01.79.

Shelby Dixon was next Elite winner as she sprinted to a 1st place finish in the Girls 11-12 100 meter butterfly with a 1.20.33 time. Shelby added a 3rd place finish (and JO cut time) in the 50 fly with a 36.09.

Following up on an 8th place (and JO cut) in the 400 IM (6.15.37), Michael Li cruised to a 1st place finish in the Boys 11-12 200 meter IM with a time of 2.54.10. Michael added a 2nd place in the 200 meter backstroke and a 3rd place finish in the 100 free with a 1.13.20.

Nicki Ross stroked to 1st place in the Girls 11-12 50 meter backstroke in a 37.34 time. Ross added a 6th place (and JO cut) in the 200 meter back with a 3.01.44 time.

Duncan Hall also got into the mix by placing 5th in the Boys 11-12 200 meter IM with a 2.59.32 time (and a JO cut).

Carolyn DeMeo soared to a 6th place finish (and JO cut time) in the Girls 11-12 100 meter Free with a 1.11.48, a 7th place finish in the 100 butterfly (1.25.47) and a 13th place finish (and JO cut) in the 200 back.

Newcomer Emmie Lai patiently waited to the last event on Sunday night to qualify for JO’s in the Girls 11-12 meter 200 back with a 3.10.07 time.

Ali Morreale competed Elite’s medal haul with a 8th place (and just missed a JO cut time) with a 32.94 time in the Girls 11-12 50 meter free.

Swimmers who participated were: Brittany Clark (3), Carolyn DeMeo (6), Shelby Dixon (6), Priya Duvvuri (1), Audrey Gammel (4), Duncan Hall (3), Regan Kology (4), Emmie Lai (6), Michael Li (4), Ali Morreale (5), Maggie Nelson (6) & Nicki Ross (3).

SECTIONALS & 13 & OLDER SILVERS THIS WEEKEND; JO’S NEXT WEEKEND:

Elite older swimmers will get into the act as they will compete in two meets this coming weekend: Sectionals and 13 & Older Silver/Bronze Championships.

After a year hiatis from Sectionals competition, Elite will return to the regional competition level (level above Junior Olympics) as Chris Dart will compete in St. Mary’s College, Maryland against the Eastern Zones (Maine to Virginia-west to Pennsylavia) in the 100 meter backstroke this coming Saturday.

Meanwhile back in New Jersey, forty Elite Seniors, Senior Preps and Wavebuster Golds will compete at the 13 & Older Silver/Bronze Championships at Rutgers University in their final attempt to qualify for Junior Olympics.
