SIMPLY ASTONISHING: ELITE YOUNGSTERS DOMINATE LCM SILVER/BRONZE
CHAMPS:
In one of the finest age group performances in Elite history, six 10 & Under and two 11-12 swimmers completely obliterated the Junior Olympic barrier this past weekend, earning 21 JO cut times at New Jersey Swimming’s 12 & Under Silver/Bronze LCM Championships at held at Rutgers University.
Elite’s
youngsters won 11 (yes, eleven!!!) individual
events (including 4 events in a row during the Sunday morning session) out of
the 50 events contested.
The 10 & Under group, consisting of Courtney Brosnan, Katie Gorman, Zackie Katz, Regan Kology, Andrea Shepard and Lindsay Stearns posted a total of 16 Junior Olympic qualifying times on their way to winning 8 individual events!!!
The 11-12 JO qualifiers were Greg Keiser (who won 3 events) and Brent Jones.
Leading the way for Elite was 10-year-old Lindsay Stearns, who qualified for Junior Olympics in each of her 6 individual events!! Lindsay won the 50-meter back (43.70), the 200 meter free (2.52.01) and tied for 1st in the 50 meter free (36.09). In addition, Lindsay posted Junior Olympics times with her 2nd place finish in the 100 back (1.34.11), her 3rd place finish with her 100 Free (1.20.44) and her 400 Free (6.11.61).
Following Stern’s lead was 10 year old Katie Gorman who splashed to 1st place in the 100 meter butterfly (1.36.92) and a 1st place in the 100 free (dropping 7 full seconds since Heat Madness in early June) with a 1.17.62. Katie even scored a JO cut time despite losing her swim cap midway thru her 400 free swim (6.14.32)!!
Equally impressive was Greg Keiser, who qualified for JO’s in 5 of the 6 events he participated in. Greg won the boys 11-12 200 Breaststroke event (the 3.19.04 time was 15 seconds under the cut time), the 200 IM (19 seconds under the cut time) and the 50 Fly (34.69). Keiser also placed 2nd in the 50 meter back (38.07).
Courtney Brosnan continued her excellent swimming (Courtney already had 7 JO events prior to this weekend’s competition) by adding two more cuts to her resume: a 1st place finish in the 200 IM (3.15.01) and a 3rd place finish in the 400 Free (5.57.75).
Though competing in his very first championship meet (he was away during spring championships), the long course competition did not intimidate 9 year old Zackie Katz as he won both the 10 & Under 50 Breast (46.89) and the 50 Free (36.23)!!!
Regan Kology showed off her conditioning by qualifying for JO’s by placing 4th in the 200 Free (2.54.02) and 5th in the 200 IM (3.24.66).
Andrea Shepard posted her 1st Junior Olympic qualifying time by cruising to a place finish in the 100 Free (1.23.12). Andrea also placed 7th in the 50 back.
Brent Jones also became a 1st time JO qualifier by gliding to a 3.27.92 fourth place finish in the Boys 11-12 200 Breast. Brent added a 7th place finish in the 50 breast.
In addition to these fine swims, there were many, many impressive gains by the remaining Elite swimmers, most of whom posted multiple best time swims!
Swimmers who participated were (official results were not yet posted as of press time): Courtney Brosnan, Meg Brosnan, Peter Davey, Sam Duren, Audrey Gammel, Hannah Gleason, Katie Gorman, Brent Jones, Zackie Katz, Greg Keiser, Regan Kology, Jessie Lowe, Brendan Miller-Radest, Collin Reilly, Andrea Shepard, Jennifer Torre, Andrea Tyminski, Sarah Weinbrom & Maggie Woodruff.

DEPOSITS TO SECURE WINTER 2006-07 ROSTER SPOTS DUE AUGUST 1ST:
Information regarding the Winter 2006-07 Season was mailed last week to each Elite swimmer whom participated in the Spring 2006 Session. That information provided the master schedule (identical to this spring’s schedule), the training group that a swimmer is slated for and the cost of the Winter 2006-07 Session.
Receipt of the $200 deposit will 1) reserve a spot for the swimmer on the Winter 2006-07 training roster 2) will trigger the purchase of the team uniform (suit, t-shirts and sweatshirts) for that swimmer and 3) allow Elite to understand the training group size vis a viz tryouts (slated for Monday, July 24 at Morristown-Beard School at 4 pm).
The deposit is non-refundable.
TRYOUTS FOR WINTER 2006-07 SESSION AT MBS ON MONDAY, JULY 24:
Elite will hold tryouts for their 2006-07 Winter Session on Monday, July 24 at Morristown-Beard School from 4 pm to 6 pm. Tryout information is now posted on the website under Tryout 2006.
At tryouts, swimmers will be required to swim 3 times: once freestyle and two out of three of the other competitive strokes. 8 & Unders will swim 25 meters for each stroke while 9 & older swimmers will swim 50 meters of each stroke.
Swimmers who joined Elite for the Spring 2006 Session are required to tryout again this summer to secure a roster spot. Swimmers who trained with Elite during both the Winter 2005-06 Session and the Spring 2006 Session need to send in their $200 deposit prior to August 1st to secure their roster spot.
In order to keep each training group size manageable, no training group will exceed 36 swimmers (6 swimmers to a lane). With regards to the Senior and Senior Preps (who practice at the same time, the combined number will not exceed 36 swimmers).
Parents of Elite swimmers who have siblings who are interested in trying out should contact Bill in advance.
A make-up tryout is slated for Tuesday, September 5 at Newark Academy from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Very, very few swimmers are expected to be taken as a result of these make-up tryouts.
WAVE TEALS,
MARLIN BLACKS & MARLIN TEALS:
SUGGESTED SUMMER
WORKOUTS ON WEBSITE;
AWARDS TO BE
PRESENTED FOR THE “OVER 20” CLUB:
For those Wave Teals, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teals who are “Stud-like” rather than “Slug-like,” Leighann and Bill have posted suggested workouts on Elite’s website (under Summer Workouts) for swimmers in these training groups to perform throughout the summer season.
To help motivate these swimmers, Elite will provide awards (to be announced) for swimmers who complete 20 or more of these workouts (parents are requested to closely monitor the dates the workouts and type of workouts that were performed).
While most of the Wave Teal, Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teal swimmers will participate at workouts and meets with their local swim clubs, doing an extra workout each day will help keep Elite swimmers practicing their body position drills and building their conditioning. These workouts are designed to remind the swimmers to stay long in the LA (LA= long axis-free & back) strokes and to get their bodies into the SA (SA= short axis-breast & fly) strokes. These workouts should be done routinely to help reminding the swimmers (and their bodies) how to swim properly.
This week, Bill will post a calendar so that swimmers and parents can keep track of the dates and the workout performed. Let’s see how many awards Elite can present next fall!!!
