SATURDAY NJ SWIMMING FEAR FACTOR MEET MAY BE CANCELLED (OR MOVED): SUNDAY LEAGUE MEET FEAR FACTOR IS STILL ON SCHEDULE:

Due to a lack of entries, the Saturday July 9 Fear Factor Meet hosted by Elite and the Madison Community Pool for members of New Jersey Swimming may be cancelled or moved to Sunday, July 10.

With only Elite (14 swimmers) and Tidal Wave (6 swimmers) having entries in the Saturday meet, Elite is attempting to move the Saturday meet to run as part of the Sunday summer league meet that Elite is also hosting with the Madison Community Pool.

Information on the status of the Saturday meet will be posted on the Elite website all this week.

Regardless of what happens with the Saturday Meet, the Sunday Summer League Meet will be run as scheduled. Ten summer league teams with a total of 60 swimmers have signed up to participate in this meet. Warm-ups will start at 7:00 am.

ASTHMA DOC VISITS ELITE:

In an effort to expand the knowledge of the Elite coaches and the effects of the training on our swimmers, Elite asked Dr. Marc Silberman of the New Jersey Sports Medicine and Performance Center in Gillete to practice last Wednesday to analyze Elite swimmers with respect to asthma related issues.

Dr. Silberman, an accomplished runner and bicyclist, specializes in “sports induced” asthma. The doctor wanted to test the swimmers within their training environment (Morristown Beard School pool) rather than his office to get the most accurate results possible.

Three Elite swimmers, Mickey Ennis (whom has asthma), Michael Li (whom has suffered what appeared to be asthma attacks) and Austin Meszaros (whom is asthma free) were tested by Dr. Silberman.

            Silberman found:

 1) with regards to Ennis, Mickey had a significant decrease in lung capacity after exercising and even after taking his medication thru an inhaler. Dr. Silberman concluded that Mickey does have exercise induced asthma and that Mickey should consider revisiting his medication intact, as his current meds are not keeping his airways open.

2) with regards to Li, Michael had no significant decrease in lung capacity after exercising. Based upon previous “asthma-like” attacks Li has suffered, it is possible that Li’s attacks were related to biological changes in his breathing tubes (tightening) due to stress. Relaxation techniques were suggested to help Michael “open-up” his airwaves during his attacks.

3) with regards to Meszaros (no prior asthma attack experience), Austin had no significant decrease in lung capacity after exercising.

Dr. Silberman is also an expert on lactic acid build-up within athletes. Elite will be inviting the doctor back in the fall to run additional experiments on swimmers with asthma and with respect to the lactic acid build-up that occurs within athletes during exercise. Dr. Silberman can be reached directly at 908-647-6464.

HOW’S THIS FOR EARLY PLANNING?

TENTATIVE 2005-06 SCHEDULE NOW POSTED ON WEBSITE!!!:

Looking Ahead? Elite’s tentative meet & event schedule for the Fall/Winter 2005-06 season is now posted on the website under Meet Schedule!!

With regards to the New Jersey Swimming meets and the elite “event dates” (suit sale, annual dinner, etc), these dates are reasonably set (venues have been contacted and dates reserved).

With regards to the dual meets/intraclub meets Elite will hold next winter, these dates are not as firmly set as fall & winter schedules of both Newark Academy and Morristown-Beard School plus confirmation with opposing teams has not yet occurred.

Hope this helps out those who plan ahead!
