MORE MEET RECORDS FALL IN LAST COMPETITION BEFORE CHAMPS:

Michael Strand and Chris Dart rewrote the Summer Solstice record book this past weekend as Elite competed for the last time prior to Summer Champships at Princeton University.

Performing in sprint stroke events rarely held in USA Swimming meets, Strand (twice) and Dart (once) crushed the previous records in events rarely swum in USA Swimming Competition. Coming off marathon performances at Summer Sizzle, both Strand and Dart were entered in 50 lcm stroke events as “fun” events. These events are only swum in YMCA competitions (Hamilton Y was meet host) as these are events that YMCA swimmers can compete in at YMCA LCM Nationals later this summer.

14 year old Michael Strand crushed the 50 back meet record with a sizzling 29.98 time on Saturday. Michael followed up on Sunday with a 2nd meet record in the 50 fly with a 28.64 time. Minutes later, Michael missed his 3rd meet record (by .03 seconds) in winning his 3rd 50 event: the 50 breast (35.15).

16 year old Chris Dart followed up by breaking his own meet record (from last year) by almost a full second with a 28.15 time in the 50 back. This swim actually had significance to Chris, as he needs to be at this pace in the front end of his 100 back, if he is to swim under the Olympic qualifying time in the 100 lcm back.

Brittany Ross added a 4th first place finish for Elite as she won the Girls Open 400 LCM Individual Medley (5.35.28), dropping 4.5 seconds from her previous best.

10 year old Zackie Katz added a Eastern Zone qualifying time in 50 fly, on his way to placing 2nd in 3 different events: 50 fly, 100 breast and 100 free.

Ricky Martin cruised to a 2nd place finish in the Boys Open 50 Free (26.76), only 1 hundred of a second off his previous best from last week.

Ali Morreale continued her great breaststroke swimming by placing 3rd in the Girls 13-14 100 meter breast (1.27.45) and 5th in the 200 meter breast (3.08.60).

Krishna Duvvuri and Regan Kology added two Junior Olympic qualifying times to their totals. Duvvuri glided to a 6th place finish in the 100 breast (1.34.51) and a 9th place finish in the 50 breast (43.05). Kology nailed both her Sunday events by finishing 7th in the 100 free (1.09.26) and 8th in the 50 breast (41.76).

Not to be outshined by her little brother, 13 year old Priya Duvvuri splashed to a Junior Olympic time in the 200 lcm backstroke event, the first time she has competed in the event in long course meters.

11 year old Katie Gorman added a JO cut in the Girls 11-12 100 meter breaststroke (1.33.79).

Newcomer Amanda Grywalski was impressive in her Elite debut, putting up times within striking distance of Junior Olympics in the breast and IM in her career first long course competition.

Full results are now posted on the website.

WINTER 2007-08 ROSTER DEPOSITS DUE SATURDAY, JULY 14;

COMMITTED SWIMMERS NOW LISTED ON WEBSITE UNDER TRYOUTS:

            Swimmers who plan on training with Elite for the Winter 2007-08 Season need to have their $300 deposit received by Bill by Saturday, July14 to maintain their roster space. The update list of swimmers who have committed to Elite for next winter is now posted on the team website under Tryouts.

            Receipt of the deposit will trigger the purchase of the team uniform (suit, t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps) in late July for each invididual.

Those swimmers who fail to have their deposit in by July 14 will need to tryout for Elite as one of the two tryouts (Tuesday, July 24 or Tuesday, September 4). Depending on the numbers within each training group, there is no guarantee that a roster spaces available at those dates.

SUMMER WORKOUTS FOR MARLIN BLACKS AND MARLIN TEALS:

            For those Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teals who are “Stud-like” rather than “Slug-like,” Elite has posted suggested workouts on Elite’s website (under Summer Marlin WO) for swimmers in these training groups to perform throughout the summer season.

            To help motivate these swimmers, Elite will provide certificates of completion for swimmers who complete 20 or more of these workouts (parents are requested to closely monitor the dates the workouts and type of workouts that were performed) during the summer.

            While most Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teal swimmers will participate at workouts and meets with their local summer swim clubs, doing an extra workout each day will help keep Elite swimmers practicing their body position drills and building their conditioning. These workouts are designed to remind the swimmers to stay long in the LA (LA= long axis-free & back) strokes and to get their bodies into the SA (SA= short axis-breast & fly) strokes. These workouts should be done routinely to help reminding the swimmers (and their bodies) how to swim properly.

            Marlin Blacks and Marlin Teals, let’s see how many awards Elite can present next fall!!!

NJ SWIMMING LCM CAPACITY WOES CONTINUE;

12 & U SILVER/BRONZE MEET REDUCED IN SIZE & SCOPE:

ELITE TO RUN DUAL/TRI MEET TO PROVIDE “LOST” EVENTS:

          Problems continue within New Jersey Swimming this summer to adequately provide opportunities for all swimmers to race in Long Course Meter Meets. The most recent problem concerns the 12 & U Silver/Bronze Championship Meet.

          Previously scheduled to be held Saturday, July 14 & Sunday, July 15 at Rutgers University, the New Jersey Swimming’s 12 & U Silver/Bronze Meet is now scheduled as a 1 day meet at the JFK Recreation Center in Newark, New Jersey. Pursuant to a Wednesday June 13 memo, the meet will be held on Sunday, July 15 and will offer the following:

1)      50 meter events in each stroke for all 12 & U swimmers who do not have a gold time

2)      100 meter events for each stroke for all 12 & U swimmers who have silver times

This format was designed to provide the most swimmers the most opportunities to compete in the meet.

In an effort to provide 12& U Elite swimmers an opportunity to compete in the events not offered at this meet, Elite will host a dual or tri-meet at Morristown Beard School on Saturday, July 14. Presently, Hunterdon County YMCA has accepted Elite’s offer to participate.

The event schedule at this meet will provide those events not offered on Sunday at NJ Swimming’s Silver/Bronze Championships. If a swimmer’s time,  as converted by the Hy-tek data manager software the Elite uses, converts to a JO time, Elite will use this time to enter the swimmer in Junior Olympics.

The capacity problem New Jersey Swimming faces this summer is directly related to 3 facts: 1) Rutgers University cut back on the availability of the their pool 2) the increase of the quantity of quality within NJ Swimming (more swimmers swim fast in NJ than ever before) and 3) the nature of LCM swimming means that roughly 50% of the swimmers can compete in the meet as opposed to when competition is held in two 25 yard pools simultaneously.

WINTER 2007-08 PRACTICE SCHEDULE TO CHANGE; MORE TIME SLOTTED FOR MARLINS & WAVE GOLDS; SCHEDULE POSTED UNDER PRACTICE SCHEDULE:

            In its never ending pursuit of using the allotted pool time as efficiently as possible, Elite will have a new practice schedule starting September 2008. The practice schedule is now posted on the team website under Practice Schedule. The schedule changes allows Elite to offer significantly more pool time to 3 of the 5 Age Group Training Groups training at Newark Academy.

            The Marlin Blacks and the Marlin Teals will now practice at the same time on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. In keeping with its policy of never having more than 36 swimmers in a training group, the total number of swimmers between the two groups will never exceed 36. By using the pool for both training groups simultaneously, both groups will be offered 4 practices a week for a total of 3.75 hours. In addition, the Marlins will start 15 minutes early from Sept thru November 15 (5:00 pm) so they can get a full hour of practice when the pool is available.

            The Wavebuster Gold training group will also gain practice time. Currently, the Wave Golds have 10 hours of practice a week. Under the current schedule, when a swimmer earns a promotion from the Wave Golds to the Senior Preps, the amount of practice time jumps to 17 hours a week. The change in the practice schedule will better prepare the Wave Golds for this expanded practice time as a Senior Prep.
