PLANNING AHEAD?

ELITE’S TENTATIVE WINTER 2006-07 MEET SCHEDULE NOW POSTED:

New Jersey Swimming has constructed its tentative meet schedule for the Winter 2006-07 Season. From that tentative meet schedule, Elite has constructed its tentative meet scheudle and has now posted its schedule on the website under Meet Schedule.

With regards to the New Jersey Swimming Meets, it can be assumed that these dates are fixed (teams were required to bid on meets and secure pools prior to their bids).

With regards to Elite’s Intraclub and Dual meet schedule, it can be assumed that there will be a meet on the weekend indicated. Elite has already reached out to several teams regarding dual meets and the specific days and start times are still in play.

For the Age Groupers (Wavebusters and Marlins), Elite is looking to find more yard dual meets next season to provide more opportunities for swimmers to make cut times.

COLLEGE NITE IS WELL ATTENDED, WELL RECEIVED:

Hoping that the collective wisdom of those with experience will help guide high school students now facing in the “Collge Hunting Process,” Elite held its 2nd annual College Nite last Wednesday. The seminar was attended by over 30 students and parents.

This year Elite changed its format to a “round table” discussion that covered 1) when to start planning 2) how to attack the process 3) the do’s and the don’ts and 4) the nuances of college recruiting.

Bill led the discussion by describing what changes he has seen in the “market” during the past few years (tougher to get into high level colleges but these same colleges are looking for students passionate about a single outside activity-like swimming!).

Margery Slonaker of Best Foot Forward (an scholar/athlete advisory company-www.bestftforward.com) described the construction of the academic piece, making sure that students are taking a full college prep load immediately upon entering high school. Slonaker did warn about “overloading” a student’s schedule, suggesting that a manageable amount of hard courses was the best route.

Senior Nick Trojanowski, who applied to 9 colleges (and accepted at all 9-and will attend the University of Chicago next fall), described how he narrowed his application list thru visiting the schools and how he proactively kept in contact with the Swim Coach or Assistant Swim Coach of each school.
