FINAL TEAM JO TOTALS: 63 INDIVIDUALS AND
351 EVENTS!!!
It is just unbelievable!! 41 Junior Olympic cuts from just 1 age group!!! Unbelievable!!
The numbers are staggering: in three Silver/Bronze Championship Meets held in 3 successive weekends, Elite swimmers have produced 12 new/additional individual qualifiers and 88 new/additional Junior Olympic qualifying times!! It’s Unbelievable!!! Elite Swim Club’s Junior Olympic team totals now stands at 63 swimmers qualified and 351 individual events (compared to last year, Elite had 52 individual qualifiers in 346 events). Unbelievable!!!
Check these facts out: in the Silver Division Girls 100 fly, Elite swept the event! Yes, Elite came in 1st (Kaitlin Stearns), 2nd (Christina Pick) and 3rd (Isabel LaRaia). In the 200 butterfly, Elite had 5 of the 12 contestants and qualified 4 different JO cuts (Pick, LaRaia, Stearns and Amy Duren). In the Silver Division Boys 500 Free, Elite placed 1st (Karl Melchior) and 2nd (Jared Kovas). In the Silver Division Boys 50 free, Elite went 2-3-5 (Avinash Duvvuri, Matt Critchley & Chris Balbo respectively). In the Silver Division Girls 50 free, Elite went 2-3-4 (Emily Gorham, Alyssa Hartigan & Isabel LaRaia). And so on….And remember, there were 25 teams at this meet!!! In addition, 18 Elite swimmers posted 6 best times each!!!!
11 year old Kaitlin Stearns was locked and loaded, as she won both the 100 fly (1.08.01) and the 200 IM (2.29.13) Silver Division events. Kaitlin also placed 3rd in the 100 IM (1.09.27), 4th in the 50 fly (30.78) and 5th in the 200 fly (2.42.02), all in JO fashion. Kaitlin now has 15 JO cut times.
12 year old Avinash Duvvuri was equally stupendous, as he won the 100 IM (1.10.36), placed 2nd in the 50 free (28.21), 4th place in both the 50 fly (32.87) & the 400 IM (6.04.93) and 8th in the 100 free (1.02.30).
11 year old Christina Pick, leading the Elite 200 butterfly contingent, dropped 19 seconds to touch first with a 2.31.23 time! Christina also placed 2nd in the 100 fly (1.09.10) and 4th in the 200 breast (2.54.59) all in JO times. She also dropped 24.5 seconds in her 4th place 500 free effort, just missing the cut by 1.5 seconds.
12 year Karl Melchior put forth an impressive swim with his 500 free victory, hanging behind the leader until 200 yards to go, then surging forth to win in a 6.02.91 & JO time. Karl also placed 2nd in three events: 1) 200 free (2.12.07-JO) 2) 200 fly (2.52.48) and 3) 100 free (1.00.73-JO). Karl’s 6th place 100 breast finish also qualifies for JO’s.
Making a big splash this weekend was 12 year old Morgan Conley. Morgan qualified for her first career Junior Olympic cut by winning the 50 back in a 31.93 time, nearly a 2 second drop!! Morgan followed up with a 10 second drop in the 200 back (2.42.98) and a 7th place bronze finish in the 200 IM (2.48.13-8 second drop).
12 year old Caroline Nash went gold 3 times, with her best finish being 3rd place in the Silver Division in the 200 IM (2.31.48). Caroline also placed 4th in the 50 back (32.25) and 5th in the 100 IM (1.09.59). Caroline, who has worked extremely hard on her weakest stroke-the breaststroke, won the Bronze Division 200 breast event (3.04.61).
12 year old Isabel LaRaia was among the leaders in 4 events; finishing 2nd in the 100 free (1.00.22), 3rd in the 100 fly (1.09.37), 4th in the 200 fly (2.38.14) and 4th in the 50 free-all in JO time. Isabel also added her 5th JO cut (her 15th in total) with her 10th place finish in the 50 fly (31.33).
12 year old Jared Kovacs showed off his endurance muscles, as he placed 2nd in both the 400 IM (5.38.04) and the 500 free (6.05.82). Both swims were JO level. Jared also placed 6th in the 100 IM (1.12.14).
11 year old Chris Balbo, attempting to finish his 18 event sweep of JO cuts, missed by just one-the 50 free. Chris went gold in other 2 events: the 100 breast-3rd place-1.20.51 & the 50 breast-4th place-37.07.
11 year old Abbie Bigham, who just aged up last month, won the Bronze Division 500 free with a 15 second drop (6.27.57). Equally if not more impressive, Abbie qualified for Junior Olympics with her first career effort in the 400 IM (5.36.53-Abbie did not place in this event as Bronze seeded swimmers are not given awards for JO qualifying times).
11 year old Matt Critchley placed 3rd and added his 4th JO cut this season with his 28.29 effort in the 50 free. Matt also placed 7th in the 100 IM (1.12.15).
11 year old Emily Gorham, who aged up last month, showed no signs of being intimidated by her elders, as she placed 2nd in the 50 free (27.96) and 9th in the 50 fly (31.32), both JO level swims in her new age group!!
12 year old Alyssa Hartigan more than double her JO output by qualifying for 3 event this weekend (she now has 5). Alyssa went gold in her 3rd place 50 free finish (27.98), in her 4th place 100 free (1.01.25) finish and her 6th place 200 free finish (2.14.55). Alyssa also placed 7th in the 200 fly (3.01.64).
A 2 second drop was what 11 year old Patrick Hong needed to slip under the JO cut in the 50 back (33.78). Patrick was also impressive with his 7 second, 1st place finish for the Bronze Division in the 100 fly and his 2nd place finish-Bronze Division-in the 50 fly (32.57).
11 year old Alicia Iizuka, also a recent age-up swimmer, collected her 2nd and 3rd JO cut this weekend in her new age group with her 2nd place finish in the 100 breast (1.18.07) and her 5th place finish in the 200 breast (2.54.62).
12 year old Cody Matheson continued his torrid improvement in all areas with his 1st career JO cut in the 50 back (33.69-6th overall). Cody also won the Bronze Division 100 IM (1.17.65).
11 year old Jimmy Coyne added his 2nd JO qualifying time to his resume, this one in the 50 breast (37.32-5th place). In the Bronze Division, Jimmy placed 2nd in the 50 back (36.01), 4th in the 100 IM (1.18.16) & 7th in the 50 free (31.49).
12 year old Elizabeth D’Altrui won the grueling 400 IM event for the Bronze Division with her 16 second drop of 5.54.57 performance. Elizabeth was also 6th in the Bronze Division of the 200 IM (2.47.74).
11 year old Amy Duren rocked with a dynamite 200 butterfly swim, earning her 1st JO time as an 11 year with her 2.42.95 (19 second drop) effort. Amy also placed 8th in the 400 IM (5.57.37).
A special mention for Gloria Xu, who placed 5th in the 400 IM in a Junior Olympic qualifying time of 5.40.53. Unfortunately, Gloria ages up this week prior to JO’s! Thus, Elite really had 42 JO cuts!
Also turning in noteworthy performances were:
1) 11 year old Rachel Hong’s 3rd place finish-Bronze Division in the 50 free (30.69) and her 8th place finish in the 100 fly (1.30.77).
2) 12 year old Andrea Ferrell’s 4th place finish-Bronze Division in the 50 back (35.70). Andrea had 6 personal bests

SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARDS WILL BE HIGHLIGHT OF AWARDS BANQUET:
17 HAVE ALREADY
APPLIED FOR AWARD; LIST ON WEBSITE; DUE MARCH 31
With the conclusion of the 2nd marking periods, swimmers are reminded that the ultimate award an Elite swimmer can earn at the season ending Awards Banquet (Sunday, April 11, 2010) will once again be the Elite Scholar-Athlete Awards. Great grades, in addition to great swim times, are required for a swimmer to earn one of these awards.
These awards will be broken down into three levels:
1) All-American
Scholar Athlete Award: Swimmer must have a 3.5 grade average and at least 1 Sectional
Qualifying time. This award is actually a USA Swimming Award and will be
presented by New Jersey Swimming. Elite will also provide a certificate to
those swimmers who have qualified for this award.
2) The Elite
Scholar-Athlete Gold Award: A swimmer must have all A’s and no more than 1 B
(or the equivalent of all A’s and 1 B) plus at least 1 individual Junior
Olympic Qualify Time
3) The Elite
Scholar-Athlete Teal Award: Swimmer must have all A’s and B’s (of the
equivalent) plus at least 1 individual Silver Qualifying Time
In addition to each swimmer receiving an impressive certificate from Elite acknowledging this achievement, from this season forward Elite will post the names of its scholar athletes on its website-forever acknowledging its most special scholar-athletes.
Parents of grammar school students should remember that Bill will review the grading legend (assuming A’s and B’s are not given) to ascertain if the swimmer has fulfilled the academic requirements to receive the award.
11 Elite
Swimmers have already applied for the award. The list is now posted on the
website:
http://www.eliteswimclub.org/Awards%20Dinner/scholar%20athlete%20awards%202010%203-11-10.pdf
Bill is
now accepting the scholastic information. If your swimmer made a JO or Silver
qualifying time last summer or this winter and then aged up, an applicant must
fill out the application form on the team website that will point Bill to the
swim in question. All scholastic information needs to be to Bill by Wednesday,
March 31. IF A SWIMMER’S 2ND MARKING PERIOD ENDS AFTER MARCH
31, PLEASE PROVIDE BILL WITH THE MOST RECENT REPORT CARD AVAILABLE.
THINKING SUMMER? THINK SUMMER SWIM CAMPS!:
Although the hot sun and humid weather seems millions of years away, summer is only 6 months away and top-notch swim camps are already taking registrations for the summer of 2010. When planning the upcoming summer, please consider sending your Elite swimmer (Wave Black level, Wave Teal level, Marlin Black level or Marlin Teal level) to one of the numerous swim camps. Wave Golds and Seniors should remain training with Elite thru the summer months
Each summer, numerous Elite swimmers spend a rewarding week (or two) at a summer swim camp. The benefits of such a camp are: 1) individual attention by renown swim coaches 2) an increased knowledge of the sport of swimming and 3) personal growth that occurs as a result of “being on one’s own.” The formula that seems to work best is finding an Elite friend to spend the week with at the swim camp.
If you are considering sending your
swimmer to a swim camp, now is the time to do the research and make decisions
(many of these camps are sold out by mid-Spring). On
the website, under Swim Camps at http://www.eliteswimclub.org/Swim Camps/index.html
is information regarding Summer Swim Camps. Many of these swim camps close out in
late February and early March!!! Also check out this month’s Swimming World
Magazine, which lists many of the swim camps.
Thinking about summer? Think Swim
Camps!!
COLLEGE BOUND AND
SWIMMING? NJ SWIMMING SCHOLARSHIP MONEY
AVAILABLE:
New Jersey Swimmers who are attending college next year and plan to swim can apply to receive a $1,250 one-time scholarship from New Jersey Swimming. Here is the link: http://www.njswim.org/NJ%20Swim%20Scholastic%20Forms/2010%20NJSIScholarshipApplicationForm.pdf
Information
regarding this scholarship opportunity is attached and the application is
posted on the NJ Swimming website under the College tab.
PARENTS: PLEASE BE PROMPT IN PICKING UP SWIMMERS:
Parents are requested to be prompt in picking up their swimmers at the end of practice. Recently, especially after the Wave Golds on weekdays and the Wave Teals on Saturday, swimmers have had to wait 30-45 minutes after practice for their ride.
Bill has asked the coaches to remain at practice until the last child has been picked up (for the obvious safety reasons). Coaches are more than willing to do so occasionally. But Elite coaches have other full time jobs and several are attending school in addition to their primary jobs and coaching. It is unfair to ask the coaches to spend an additional 30-40 minutes waiting for parents to pick up their children virtually every night.
Elite is prompt about ending practice on time. Please help out the coaches by being prompt to pick up your child.
