BATTLE WEARY SWIMMERS SHOW SIGNS OF FATIGUE VERSES CLIFTON;

ITS JUST WHERE WE WANT THEM!!!:

In their only lackluster performance of the season, the Elite Age Groupers showed signs of fatigue this weekend in their dual meet against Clifton Boys and Girls Club. And the coaches couldn’t be happier!!

As explained in previous weekly memos, our swimmers are now training in “Repetition Season.” During this training cycle, the practice yardage is reduced but the demand on the sprint/anaerobic energy system is challenged night after night. Despite less yards and much more rest, we are actually taxing the swimmers bodies to the maximum (anyone noticed their child is a bit more cranky than usual?). This results in swimmers being more tired, less energetic and understandably more irritable.

In working hard during this phase of the training, the coaches are preparing for the final act: championship season. Shortly, the swimmers will transition into Sprint Season, which while still taxing the anaerobic system, this phase is significantly less taxing than Repetition. Sprint Season is followed by Taper Season (10 days to 2 weeks), where complete resting occurs (during this phase we are restocking the energy sources in the body as we lighten up the workload). The body still thinks hard work is still possible so it continues to build muscle at the same rate as before during the other phases.

On championship race day(s), we should have a powerful, yet fully rested athlete capable of tremendous performances!!!

The results of this weekend’s dual meet being flat tells the coaches that the kids are working very hard in practice. We are confident they will reap the benefits from this hard work in several weeks time.
