GALEA, KATZ, SEBASTIAN K. STEARNS, L. STEARNS, POST SUMMER LCM ZONE TIMES:
You can lengthen the pool, but the results for the Elite Swimmers remain constant: magnificient!!!
Competing in the long course venue (50 meters verses the typical winter venue of 25 yards) this past weekend at the 19th Annual CeraVe Invitational, the Elite swimmers posted some very impressive results. In being the only long course meets held during the winter months, this meet attracts a number of the most prestigious teams from the Northeast (Attleboro Mass Bluefish, Asphalt Green-NYC, Jersey Wahoos-south Jersey, Long Island Aquatic Club, Badger Swim Club-NY, Westchester Marlins-NY, Germantown Academy-Pa, Delaware Swim Team, Coastal Maine, even a team from the Cayman Islands!!) along with the usual strong New Jersey contingent (Berkeley, Peddie, Scarlet, NJ Wave). The results are particularly impressive as long course is considered a more challenging venue condition wise (and thus, swimmers in the best swimming condition are the ones who tend to excel).
The meet is a high enough profile meet that Swimming World Magazine covered the meet personally; and has and is providing website streaming: link: http://www.swimmingworld.tv/2010-cerave-invitational/
12 year old Zach Katz, in his last meet as a 12 year old, went out in style as he won 3 events, and in the process rewrote the CeraVe record book by setting a new meet record by .6 in the 50 lcm breaststroke -34.19! Zach also won the 100 breast (1.18.38) which time is a Zone qualifying time for his next age group (13-14) and the 50 fly (30.66). Zach also placed 2nd in the 50 free (28.27) and placed 3rd in 3 separate events: 50 back (32.79), the 100 fly (1.09.45) and the 200 IM (2.33.60). Zach’s lowest place was 4th, which he placed in the 100 back (1.14.90) with a 7 second drop.
11 year old Andrea Galea nearly matched Katz’s dazzling performance. In her first event of the meet, Andrea rocketed to a 1st place finish in the 50 back with a 32.75 time! Andrea finished the meet with another 1st place finish, this time in the 100 back (1.11.91-4 second drop). Sandwiched in between these victories were two 3rd place finishes (50 free-30.30) and the 100 breast-1.26.69), a 4th place finish (50 fly-32.56) and a 5th place finish (1.06.08- 100 free). Galea’s 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast and 50 fly were all Zone qualifying times (she now has 6!).
10 year old Alicia Iizuka reached the wall first in the 50 breast (41.90). Earlier in the meet, Alicia had placed 3rd in the 100 breast (1.33.77).
13 year old Lindsay Stearns nearly captured her 1st Sectional qualifying time-in two different events!! On Saturday, in the demanding 200 lcm butterfly event, Linday churned to a 2nd place finish and a 2.29.69 time-just .2 seconds off the coveted Sectional qualifying time (and a 5 second drop). Lindsay returned on Sunday to place 2nd in the 100 fly, dropping almost 3 seconds and missing the Sectional mark by just 3 hundredths of a second!!! Lindsay also placed 5th in the 100 back (1.13.40) and 7th in the 400 IM (with a 12.6 second drop!!!). The 100 back, 200 IM and 400 IM swims were Zone qualifiers.
11 year old Kaitlin Stearns snagged a third 2nd place finish for the family with her fabulous 50 free performance (30.26). Kaitlin followed up with a 3rd place finish in the 100 free (1.05.94) and a 6th place finish in the 200 free (2.25.68). Kaitlin’s 50 & 100 free swims were Zone caliber!
10 year old Michael Tortorella stroked to a 3rd place finish in the 50 breast (42.57). Michael also placed in the money with an 8th place finish in the 50 free (33.22).
Also in the limelight was 13 year old Ryan Sebastian. Ryan posted a best time in all 9 of his events and earned two 4th place finishes (100 back-1.06.86 & 200 back-2.23.35). Ryan was 6th in the 200 breast (2.49.39), 7th in the 100 fly (1.05.19) and 8th in the 200 fly (2.26.11). The 200 breast, the 100 fly and 200 IM times were Zone qualifiers-Ryan now has 7 Zone cuts.
10 year old Karen Iizuka also was impressive, snatching 4th place in the 50 breast (43.34) and 5th in the 100 breast (1.36.02).
10 year old Emily Gorham was a 6th place finisher twice: in the 50 free (33.65) and the 50 fly (36.85). Emily also scored points (top 8 in 14 & U scored points) in the 50 back, with her 40.62 performance. All 6 of Emily’s swims were personal bests.
17 year old Michael Strand, still fighting off the effects of his bout with mono, swam a reduced schedule but mustered enough to place 7th in the 100 back (1.02.04) & 8th place twice: 100 fly (1.00.21) and 50 free (25.41). Michael also placed 13th in the 100 beast (1.12.86) and 16th in the 200 IM (2.19.36).
13 year old Kara Miller-Radest was tough in the 100 fly, placing 8th with her 1.10.29 swim.
17 year old Adam Weinbrom, swimming in finals (for 15 & Older swimmers only) placed 12th with his career fastest 25.73 swim in the 50 free.
17 year old Venka Duvvuri (100 fly), 16 year old Priya Duvvur (100 fly), 15 year old Michael Li (100 & 200 breast) and 15 year old Alex Mango (100 free) also participated in non-scoring finals events. Li’s 200 breast event was particularly noteworthy, as his career best swim nearly required him needing help from the pool, as he gave nearly every ounce of his energy in his race!
Also noteworthy was 11 year old Chris Balbo’s 10th place finish in the 400 free (5.00.35) as it was a Zone qualifying time!
Full results are posted on the team website.

For most participating in their 2nd performance in as many weeks, the Elite swimmers kept the pedal to the metal this weekend in a spectacular performance at the Princeton Invitational. The meet was co-hosted by Elite and our efforts allowed our swimmers over 550 splashes which times updates our swimmers progress and prepares them for Championship Season-just 6-8 weeks away!
12 year old Isabel LaRaia and 10 year old Gian Soriano won events while Gabrielle Pick (in her last 12 & U performance) and Soriano placed 2nd. Many events had 150 entrants!
LaRaia collected the 50 breast gold medal with a JO performance (she already had the JO cut) of 35.55. Isabel also placed 3rd in the 100 breast (1.18.79) and 8th in the 100 free (1.02.16).
Soriano snagged the gold in the 100 butterfly with his 1.17.36 time. Gian followed up with a 2nd place finish in the 50 fly (33.42) and a 4th place finish in the 200 free, which was his 7th JO qualifying time this season.

Hartigan was triumphant in the grueling 400 IM (5.38.35) and Alyssa backed that swim up with an 8th place finish in the 50 back. All 6 of Alyssa’s swims were personal bests. Pick also turned the JO trick in the 400 IM (5.26.46-20 second drop!) in placing 7th. Christina also placed 7th in the 200 IM (2.36.50) and the 50 back (33.71).
9 year old Grace Xu doubled her JO total (4) in being the only Elite swimmer to add multiple JO cuts this weekend. Grace was successful in both the 200 free (2.36.61-8th place & 7 second drop) and the 200 IM (2.58.94-6th place-12 second drop). Grace also placed 6th in the 100 fly (1.27.79).
Splitting his time between CeraVe and Princeton, 12 year old Karl Melchior spent enough time at Princeton to pick up his 9th JO cut, this one in the 50 breast (37.85). Karl also placed 6th in the 50 free (28.44).
Also participating in both meets, 14 year old Richard Yu also was fast enough in the 200 free (1.57.74-1st time under 2 minutes!) to score his 3rd JO cut of the season. Richard’s effort was good enough for 5th place.
13 year old Jess Gorham placed 3rd in the 100 free (56.26), 4th in the 100 back (1.04.61), 5th in the 200 free (2.05.27-new JO cut for her-#5) & 8th in the 100 breast (1.17.47).

12 year Jared Kovacs collected his 4th JO cut (and his 3rd in the breast) with his 7th place finish in the 100 breast (1.22.13). Earlier in the meet, Jared had placed 3rd in the 50 breast (36.76).
12 year old Scott Harris added his 5th JO qualifying time (all in events 200 yards and longer) with his 5th place finish in the 200 free (2.15.44).
10 year old Alicia Iizuka, who also raced at CeraVe, dropped a second to place 4th in the 50 fly (37.07) and almost 3 seconds to place 6th in the 100 IM (1.18.42). 15 year old Lindsey Giostra dropped 12 seconds in the 400 IM (5.01.79) to place 4th.

13 year old Juliet Felsen lopped off 7 seconds in the 400 IM (5.13.90) to place 8th. Juliet also dropped 9 seconds in her 500 free (5.50.34). 10 year old Andrew Huang-also a double meet participant, placed 8th in the 100 back (1.21.36).
13 year old Katie McGrath’s 1.08.67 time in the 100 fly was good enough for a 8th place finish. Katie also dropped17 seconds in her 500 free swim (5.52.14).

RUTGERS COLLEGE CONFERENCE CARNIVAL: ELITE RELAYS ACCEPTED-ONE RELAY IN EACH AGE
GROUP & GENDER ACCEPTED-RELAYS TO BE POSTED THIS WEEK,
OLYMPIAN ERIC SHANTEAU CLINIC FOR ALL; LIVE BROADCAST ON WEB!!!
Year 2 of Rutgers
University Women’s Varsity Swim Team’s
College Conference Carnival will see
Olympian Eric Shanteau and Olympian Josh Davis in a 3 hour clinic open to all swimmers
in New Jersey.
Building on the
swimming phenomena generated from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Rutgers University
Women’s Team will again host a “College Conference Carnival” at Rutgers
University on Friday, January 22 & Saturday, January 23, 2010. Committed to
competing at the collegiate level are Rutgers, the University of Minnesota, the
University of Maryland-Baltimore, the University of Richmond, the University of
Central Connecticut and Rider University. All of these teams either won or
placed 2nd in their respective conferences.
As
part of the festivities, Rutgers will coordinate 4 events that will (hopefully)
directly impact Elite Swimming: in the middle of the meet: Rutgers has
scheduled relay races for the top 8 teams in New Jersey (including southern NJ
which is part of the Mid-Atlantic LSC) in both the 9-10 and 11-12 Age Groups. Each of the
4 Elite has submitted 4 relays (one each
for girls and boys in both the 10 & Under and
11-12 Age Groups) have been accepted to compete-these relays with alternates
will be posted on the team website in the next day or two!!
As
currently scheduled, the 11-12 Boys and Girls Relays will participate at
approximately 7 pm Friday night and the 9-10’s will participate at
approximately 7:45 pm on Saturday night.
In
addition to the competition at both the College and Age Group level, Rutgers
will be hosting Olympian’s Eric Shanteau and Josh
Davis (who visited Elite two years ago with Kate Zieglar)
on Saturday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Information
on how to reserve your tickets to this clinic is attached!!!
Rutgers will also be planning other entertain activities at the meet such as Synchro Diving & Big Man Cannonball Contests, Masters World Record 3-Meter Diving Contest and Clown Diving. Tickets for the event are now being offered at: http://ev12.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetGroupList?groupCode=RF&linkID=rutgers&shopperContext=&caller=&appCode=.
Below is the most recent communiqué from Rutgers about the event:
We are very excited about the second Swimming World Magazine College Conference Carnival that opens two weeks from Friday night, the 22nd and completes on the 23rd. This ‘made for TV’ package was met with huge positive feedback last year. The atmosphere of live (internet) TV with on deck interviews, Olympians roaming the stands and pool deck, fast college swimming with a mix of age-group relays with diving, clown diving does a great job of showcasing aquatics and swimming in general to a large audience. Swimming World will make this the featured event over two nights of January 22-23rd on www.swiminfo.com. This is a very special opportunity to show people in the university setting that swimming, diving and aquatics can be an EVENT!
Last year 2500 people watched the live broadcast, with another 1000 in the stands over two nights. This year we are adding a ‘search and rescue’ demonstration by the Army on Friday night (just 5 minutes), plus a clinic with Josh Davis and Eric Shanteau on Saturday afternoon leading up to the clinic. (Information attached. This is a big risk for Josh and Eric to do at the last minute, please consider promoting to appropriate swimmers.) All the teams with age-group relays are entered and planning to be back. Last year many of us were stunned by their performances, including the Lakeland Hills Y 9-10 girls 200 free relay that set at NJ LSC record of 1:56. Amazing.
Elite
parents of swimmer participating: if you are a NJ Swimming Official, please
contact Jim O’Neil to officiate (these events only!). This will get you into
the door for free and will help enable any record setting relay to be
recognized as such!!!
ELITE’S ON THE MAP;
USA SWIMMING’S CLARK VISIT IS PROMPTED BY TEAM PERFORMANCE:
USA Swimming’s Eastern Zone Coordinator Peter
Clark has noticed Elite’s tremendous progress; and he visited with Head Coach
Bill Deatly and Patty Martin Turkot
last week to help insure our future growth!
Clark, who was in New Jersey to for
the CeraVe Invitational, reached out to Bill and
asked if he could visit with Elite to discuss the team’s progress and future.
Peter spent 3 hours with Bill and Patty last Thursday discussing ways Elite
could benefit from USA Swimming resources.
Clark chose Elite to visit based upon USA Swimming’s Virtual Club
Championship statistic (link:http://www.usaswimming.org/usasweb/Report/ReportHolder.aspx?TabId=901&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en&ItemId=35&mid=2594),
which currently has Elite as the 110 best club in the country (out of 4000; top
2.75%!!).
Some of Clark’s suggestions: 1) more and regularly scheduled meetings
with parents (guess what will happen in February?) 2) have Bill and/or
assistant coaches visit with top level coaches-like Bob Bowman (Michael Phelp’s coach) and Chuck Batchelor
(Olympian Elizabeth Beisel’s coach) to learn how they
structure their clubs and practices (guess what Elite coaches will be doing
this spring?) 3) provide USA Swimming with team information in order for the
club to be recognized internally and externally and 4) to revisit the team’s 4
year developmental plan.
COLLEGE BOUND AND
SWIMMING? NJ SWIMMING SCHOLARSHIP MONEY

….JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE NOT TO LOOK AT OUR PRACTICE
SCHEDULE: HIGH SCHOOL MEETS TO DISRUPT PRACTICES:
In December, January and thru the middle of February, high school & middle school swim teams conduct practice and meets at the two pools Elite uses. Incredibly, a total of 7 high school and middle school teams use either Newark Academy or Morristown-Beard School during this time in addition to Elite. What these means to us is that Elite’s practices will be disrupted as meets will encroach into Elite’s practice times.
On
days when there are no meets, Elite’s practices will be held at the identical
time. However, on those days when a high school or middle school is using one
of our pools for a meet, our practices might be shortened at the front end or
on the back end. And meets get canceled and rescheduled. So, please continue
to check the practice schedule for practice time changes on a daily basis!!
PARENTS RESPONSIBILITY AT 9-10S, 13 & OLDER CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Parents are reminded that although we ran a spectacular Distance Derby meet in November at Newark Academy, Elite will be running two more meets this season: 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championships and 13 & Older Silver/Bronze Championships (co-hosted with Morris County Swim Club).
With regards to the 9-10 Silver/Bronze Championships, all parents of swimmers 10 & younger (yes, including 8 & Under parents!) will be expected to work that weekend.
With regards to the 13 & Older Silver/Bronze Championships, all parents of swimmers 13 & Older (with exceptions being parents of swimmers attending Sectionals in Boston, Massachusetts) l be expected to work that weekend.
WITH WINTER COMES WEATHER,
CHECK WEBSITE/EMAIL FOR PRACTICE CANCELLATIONS:
Weather will have an affect on practice schedules and meet starting times. When in doubt, check the Elite website and your email for information regarding time changes due to weather.
Be advised that both Newark Academy and Morristown Beard tend to close down at the forecast of bad weather. In addition, safety is extremely important. Thus, weather is likely to interrupt practice and even if it does not, parents should make decisions based upon their comfort level regarding travel to and from practice.
SICK? COULD BE YOUR LACK OF “AT HOME” SWIMMING DETAILS!!!
Are you sick? Got
the flu, strep or a bad head cold? Your sickness is probably caused by
your own lack of swimming details!!!
Since we are in our heaviest training, swimmers are “broken down” or
tired based upon the heavy swimming workload. To stay healthy, each swimmer needs to practice their “at home” swimming
details: drinking lots of fluids, eating properly and often, getting enough
sleep and dressing properly for winter.
There are
literally dozens of swimmers that ignore these vital “at home” swimming
details, and most of these swimmers end up missing significant training and/or
actually missing their meets because they do not live their “at home” swimming
details. These swimmers literally shorten their training seasons due to their
sickness!!!
One new swimmer
phenomena that is just plain crazy is the “sandal/no sock look” in zero degree
weather. Swimmers who dress like this are literally begging to get sick. One
Elite swimmer actually got frostbite several years ago due to not dressing
properly on the way home from swimming on a particularly cold night. Ever tried
swimming with frostbite? Be a winner: do your swimming details at home and at school,
in addition to at the pool!!!
PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS:
ATTENDENCE, LEVEL OF TRAINING
AND STROKE TECHNIQUE:
As we are already passed the mid-point of our training season, swimmers and parents are reminded that swimmers EARN their promotions by accomplishing 3 criteria thru the season. Coaches will make their recommendations for promotions to Bill starting in mid January and the promotion letters will be mailed in early February. No swimmer will be considered for promotion unless they comply with the following 3 criteria (and swimmers are reminded that they control this process, not the coaches);
1) great attendance as defined as follows:
a. over 70% for Marlin Teals, Marlin Blacks, Wave Teals & Wave Blacks.
b. over 80% for Wave Golds
c. over 85% for Senior Preps
2) Training within the top lanes in one’s training group. Each training group has 2 to 6 different levels of training within the training group. A swimmer must be training within the top 2 training levels to be considered.
3) Great stroke technique. While swimmers are training in the top level of their training group, they need to hold their stroke technique. Each swimmer is aware of those things they need to work on.
Each
swimmer is encouraged to talk to their coach regarding their current status and
things they need to do during the 2nd half of the season to earn a
promotion.
PARENTS: PLEASE BE PROMPT IN PICKING UP SWIMMERS:
Parents are requested to be prompt in picking up their swimmers at the end of practice. Recently, especially after the Wave Golds on weekdays and the Wave Teals on Saturday, swimmers have had to wait 30-45 minutes after practice for their ride.
Bill has asked the coaches to remain at practice until the last child has been picked up (for the obvious safety reasons). Coaches are more than willing to do so occasionally. But Elite coaches have other full time jobs and several are attending school in addition to their primary jobs and coaching. It is unfair to ask the coaches to spend an additional 30-40 minutes waiting for parents to pick up their children virtually every night.
Elite is prompt about ending practice on time. Please help out the coaches by being prompt to pick up your child.
CLOTHING ITEMS PREVIOUSLY
PURCHASED THRU ESCPO NOW IN: CONTACT ALLISON NASH:
The clothing items previously purchased thru ESCPO have arrived. Parents are encouraged to contact Allison Nash to arrange pick-up at Newark Academy. Allison’s email address is ALLISONRNASH@MSN.COM.
WHEN IN DOUBT, CHECK THE WEBSITE:
If you have questions about Elite, your first source of information is Elite’s website located at eliteswimclub.org. When in doubt, first check the website!!!
