Like a great action movie with a spectacular opening scence and a challenging and exciting final scene (plus lots of Hollywood drama in between), the Elite swimmers provided plenty of “Oscar Nominee” performances this past weekend during in the last tune-up before “End of the Season” Championships: Senior/Junior State Championships, held at Seton Hall University. Mason’s swim qualified her for Junior Olympics in this event 6) Danielle Basile smashing her best 400 IM time with a 10 second drop of 5:12.46-7th best all time 15 & older time (and a full 20 second drop since last year’s best time) 7) Julianne Furdyna dropping 7 seconds in her 400 IM. Not only was Julianne the only Elite swimmer to perform the grueling task of both the 500 Free and the 400 IM the same night, but several hours before the meet Julianne competed in 4 events a high school meet-including the 500 Free!!! 8) Christian DeFluri destroying his previous best time in the 400 IM with a 4.49.55, 13 seconds faster than his previous. 9) Ending the evening, Nick Trojanowski dropped 6 seconds in the 400 IM to a 4:39.00 and posting his 1st Junior Olympic time this season!!!! Despite following the rules and not breaking any other NJ swimming rules, Elite was required to conform to the “conventional” warming up routine. Rather than backing down, the Elite Senior Girls (and later the Senior Boys) showed spunk and grit in their response: letting their performance speak for themselves (and a lot of team cheering!!!). Seniors : 1) Veronica Smith posting a personal best 27.03 time in the 50 free 2) Claire DiGiacomo dropped 5 seconds in her 200 free (2.12.41) and posting the 7th best 100 back time with a 1.05.94. 3) Shayla McDonnell swimming a personal best in the 50 free (28.04) 4) Jonathan Denby qualifying for finals in the 200 Breast-placing 8th with a 2.25.87 time 5) Jeffrey Ayres qualifying for finals in the 200 breast and the 200 free (with a best of 1.50.89) 6) Mickey Ennis dropping 4 seconds in his 200 free (2.01.46) 7) “Ironman” Matthew Poloniak swimming the 200 breast and then, literally 2 minutes later, swimming the 200 free 8) Dennis Estok breaking 24 seconds in the 50 free for the 1st time (23.82) and dropping 2 seconds in his 200 free (1.58.84) 9) Julianne Furdyna speeding to a 19.05.68 time in the 1650 swim (a mile swim)-3rd best on the all-time list 10) Nick Trojanowski collecting his 2nd Junior Olympic Time with a 17.54.48 Juniors: 1) Priya Duvvuri improving both her 50 free time (28.57) and 100 back (1.12.36). The last event scheduled on the last day was the grueling 200 butterfly. Colleen Mason and Brittany Ross concluded their “preliminary” session on Sunday at 6:00 pm with spectacular swims of 2.30.07 and 2.30.80. Based upon those swims, both Colleen and Brittany qualified to compete in finals. Just a scant 2 hours later (allowing only a quick meal and brief) warm-up, both girls not only competed, but swam the stud times of 2.30.47 (Colleen) and 2.27.36 (Brittany). In fact, Brittany’s 2nd time dropped her under the Junior Olympic cut time . A perfect way to end at monsterous weekend of swimming!!! Swimmers who participated were:
![]() “NON 9-10” VOLUNTEERS STEP UP TO HELP AT 9-10 SILVER/BRONZE CHAMPIONSHIPS BUT MORE HELP NEEDED This coming weekend (February 26-27), Elite will be co-hosting with Sea Dragons the 9-10 Silver/Bronze “South” Championship Meet at Newark Academy. The meet is expected to have 425 participants each day. Last week's plea for additional help was rewarded with a number of additional volunteers outside of the “9-10 parents pool.” Bill and Brandy appreciate their offer of help. However, we are still looking for additional parents or swimmers whom would like to help this massive undertaking. Parents and swimmers (community service time!!) whom have time during the weekend (even a two-hour stint) and would be willing to help, please contact Brandy at 908-273-6542 or by email at eliteswimclubnj@comcast.net. ![]() SICK? COULD BE YOUR LACK OF “AT HOME” SWIMMING DETAILS!!! Are you sick? Got the flu, strep or a bad head cold? Your sickness is probably caused by your own lack of swimming details!!! Since we are heading towards our championship season (late February/March), this is the most crucial segment of your training season. Each swimmer needs to practice their “at home” swimming details: drinking lots of fluids, eating properly and often, getting enough sleep and dressing properly for winter. There are literally dozens of swimmers that ignore these vital “at home” swimming details, and most of these swimmers end up missing significant training and/or actually missing their meets because they do not live their “at home” swimming details. These swimmers literally shorten their training seasons due to their sickness!!! One new swimmer phenonem that is just plain crazy is the “sandal/no sock look” in zero degree weather. Swimmers who dress like this are literally begging to get sick. One Elite swimmer actually got frostbite last week due to not dressing properly on the way home from swimming on a particularly cold night. Ever tried swimming with frostbite? Be a winner: do your swimming details at home and at school, in addition to at the pool!!! ![]() TOP 10 TIMES NOW POSTED ON WEBSITE Thru an excellent parental suggestion, the Top 10 Times list is now posted on Elite’s website. The practice schedule will be identical to the 2004 Fall practice schedule (4:30 pm start time). Information regarding the Spring 2005 session was mailed late last week. The deadline to register for Spring 2005 Session is (next) Tuesday, March 1st. As previously noted, most swimmers were invited to train within their existing training groups (this is especially true in the higher training groups). A small percentage of swimmers were “invited” to train in the next higher training group. Attendence, where and how well a swimmer trains within their current training group and each swimmer’s times were the criteria that was considered in inviting a swimmer to “move-up.” The Spring Session will initially focus on stroke technique and form. As the session moves towards conclusion, the coaches will shift to conditioning to help put each swimmer in the best postion for a successful summer season with their summer club team. Elite will be holding “tryouts” for swimmers not currently members of Elite but whom would like to become members. Tryouts will be held at Newark Academy starting at 4:30 pm on the following days: 1) 10 & Unders: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 2) 11 & Older: Wednesday, March 23, 2005 3) Make-ups-all ages: Thursday, March 24, 2005 Swimmers who have signed up for Spring, as of February 18, are as follows: Marlin Teals: Arlynn Baer, Sam Barback, Kaity Brosnan, Maggie Burd, Will DeMartin, Andrea Ferrell, Sean MacInnes & James Sullivan Marlin Blacks: Alex Aiello, Matthew Aiello, Frank Farinella, Madeline Faust, Zachary Katz, Aaron Levin, Michael Pepper & Gabi Romano Wave Teals: Arjun Arora, Courtney Brosnan, Meg Brosnan, Ryan Buckham, Nora Burd, Taylor Campolattaro, Spencer Cielsa, Brittany Clark, Dillon Denehy, Willy Friedlander, Katie Gorman, Greg Keiser, Regan Kology, Jessie Lowe, Katie Rouse, Andrea Shepard, Kara Stevens, Jennifer Torre, Nicole Weissman & Zach Yanes Wave Blacks: Kristina Beaudouin, Monica Carty, Isabelle DeMartin, Kaitlin Farinella, Kristi Froisland, Audrey Gammel, Victoria Keiser, Alyssa Pepper, Abigail Rollenhagen & Erica Takahashi Wave Golds: Lindsay Anderson, Tad Deatly, Louise DeMartin, Morgan Kiley, Michael Li, Maggie Nelson, Katie Psillakis & Katie Ragan, Senior Preps: Katie Bohan, Sarah Peay & Henry Scott Seniors: Danielle Basile, Maggie Beaudouin, Craig Bostwick, Corey Deatly, Julianne Furdyna, Emily Gadsden, Katie Kilcullen, Shayla McDonnell, Austin Meszaros, Veronica Smith, Lily Thompson & Nick Trojanowski ![]() SUMMER: THINK SWIM CAMPS When planning the upcoming summer, please consider sending your Elite swimmer to one of the numerous swim camps available within driving distance. Each summer, numerous Elite swimmers spend a rewarding week (or two) at a summer swim camp. The benefits of such a camp are: 1) individual attention by reknown swim coaches 2) an increased knowledge of the sport of swimming and 3) personal growth that occurs as a result of “being on one’s own.” The formula that seems to work best is finding an Elite friend to spend the week with at the swim camp. If you are considering sending your swimmer to a swim camp, now is the time to do the research and make decisions (many of these camps are sold out by mid-Spring). In the back of the mailbox, there are a list of swim camps which Elite swimmers have attended in the past and where to find more information about each camp. In addition, Bill can email this list to you at your request. This summer: think Swim Camps!! ![]() NJ TIME STANDARDS POSTED ON ELITE’S WEBSITE Time Standards for the End of the Season Championship Meets have been adopted by New Jersey Swimming, are posted on Elite’s website (under time standards) and are posted on the wall at Newark Academy.
